I is noob.
----------------------------------------I've got 60 gigs on my hard drive that I'd like BOINC to utilize. I've cranked up my preferences having it use 100% of memory, CPU time, etc., and all the memory I can spare. When I open "Disk" however, I see it's only using 28 Mb of my hard drive. I've only got 512 MB RAM, but can't I crank up performance somehow with 60 gigs left to use? Can I fill that up with other BOINC projects besides World Grid stuff? Got all this HD space, help me put it to use.
I'm here to spread love all over the world.

Processors (more and faster), and a decent amount of RAM. It's mostly used as a temporary spot for in-process WUs (before they're returned) and logs. Is there anything these 60 gigs can do to advance a cause? Is there another distributed computing project that needs some HD space?

There was a Storage@Home from Stanford, but I can't find any more information about it than this: http://www.stanford.edu/~beberg/Storage@home2007.pdf You can also check out http://www.distributedcomputing.info and see if there are any others that use a lot of disk space; I don't think there are though. |

Storage@Home at Stanford used the local fiber-band network to try to create a virtual distributed disk array. Very tricky research project - - stay away fom it unless you are writing a doctoral dissertation on the subject (IMHO).

Short of Over Clocking (OC'ing) your system, its not likely you'll be able contribute more than your system is already contributing. That being said, OC'ing is at best risky business. Trust me, I've burned up several motherboards; CPU's; video cards and Power Supplies over the years. So unless you are willing to experiment on your machine; raise voltages here and there; invest in good cooling devices (Air, Water, Phase Exchangers, Dry Ice or LN) perform significant research and be willing to turn your systems into TOAST from time to time, then the guidance is "DON'T DO IT ." This is almost akin to that now famous scream, "DON'T TAZE ME BRO'." ![]() |

But if the first thought was, "broken components, so what? more power, let's do it! " then you can go for it...cheers Mika

If anyone is interested in getting out MAXIMUM work for the World Community Grid, then I would strongly suggest, buying a good computer such as a computer with a "Core2 Quad" Processor or "better" and use adequate RAM (don't go foolish cheap on the RAM). You'll be able to do 4 jobs at a time. I have 2 computers. One computer I bought in 1999 and the other I bought last year (2008). On my old computer I did upgrade the mother board some years ago so that I would be able to use an "Athlon XP 3000+" CPU and more and faster RAM on it. I gained a little speed off of it but it wasn't awesome BUT my new HP Computer with the "Core2 Quad" Processor is doing about 12 times more work for the World Community Grid that my OLD Computer is doing.
----------------------------------------Don't spend money foolishly trying to bring and "old tired horse" up to speed. Get a computer with a "Core2 Quad" Processor or "better" and again, USE ADEQUATE RAM!!!!!! RAM is very inexpensive now. Well, you all have a good night.
