Le Tour riders need 'mutant' bodies

The ability of riders such as Lance Armstrong and Robbie McEwen is a combination of genetics and training, say experts

News analysis To survive the demands of the Tour de France elite cyclists must do more than train, they must also harbor a set of inborn traits, say experts.
The Tour de France is a gruelling, leg-burning, heart-straining event that challenges cyclists to superhuman feats.
This year's race covers more than 3500 kilometres in three weeks, with only two rest days. By the end of the tour, riders will have climbed 23 mountain passes, some up to 2000 metres high.
The stamina required to do such a thing sounds impossible to most people - and for most of us, it is.
"There is no other sport in the world that continues for 21 days, day in and day out, over mountains, in the rain and heat, over rough terrain," says Hunter Allen, an elite cycling coach and co-author of Training and Racing with a Power Meter. "These guys are the crème of the crème of the crème of the top."
"The guys that win?" he says. "They are genetic mutants. Truly mutants. There aren't many of them on the planet."......

Two hundred years ago, the organizers of the Tour de France took riders high into mountains for the very first time. And, from there, the mystique of the Tour de France grew and grew. To commemorate this occasion, a group of modern day riders retraced the same route through the Pyrenees, which includes some legendary climbs: the Col de Peyresourde, the Col d’Aspin, the Col du Tourmalet, the Col du Soulor, etc. The weather conditions are slightly tough for these riders, but their bikes are light and modern, and the gearing much more forgiving than what their forebears had. Meanwhile the film documenting their ride is a pleasure to watch. The runtime is about 15 minutes.

The 1910 Challenge
The centenary of the Col du Tourmalet's inclusion in the Tour de France will be celebrated with a mountain-top finish on stage 17 of this year's edition of the race. As well as the special edition Tourmalet Jersey, Rapha honour the first ever Tour stage that tackled the Tourmalet with a tribute ride, The 1910 Challenge applause
