Re: Cost of crunching

Sadly I lost my Grandpa to cancer quite recently so will be comissioning a dual cpu (Opteron/Xeon, haven't decided yet) machine to run on cancer projects in his memory.

Plenty of people here who can help you with that decision biggrin

Welcome back!

Re: Cost of crunching

Hello Oliver,
A kind gesture, hopefully supported by sensible buying wink
If you can afford it, get an i7 of some description.
They are good at getting through cancer tasks, do the most work, and are the most cost effective CPU's in terms of points/Watt & points/£price. I know you can get dual and quad socket monster systems that are perhaps slightly more efficient, but I'm sure your granddad would not want you to go broke in his memory!
It might be an idea to sell your existing system and use the funds to help buy a new one, or buy the new one, set it up and then sell the old one.

Good luck,

Re: Cost of crunching

Hello oliverstirling.

This is the first time I have visited this 'Caring and Sharing' section of the WCG forum. That 'Cost of crunching' title sure drew me in.. what with the global economic downturn. In any case, hey, glad to know you're back here in WCG. Now WCG is 1-cruncher stronger. Hurray! biggrin

Good day
;
Edit: to correct a spelling error.

Re: Cost of crunching

welcome back... unfortunately with my situation i have been reduced to two machines right now (not supposed to lift anything more than 5 lbs and bending over to pick up a computer gives me a dizzy spell not to mention the thought of trying to plug all the wires back in if i get one repaired... two of my machines are out but they were the two slowest (probably 5 years old each).

but welcome back Oliverstirling. and sad news about your grandpa.

each day the reality of cancer and aids and so many other diseases hits home to so many members.... i honestly think of it as not the cost of crunching but the cost of not crunching... and you might try that on a few friends who dont want to donate there computer time.

sure one person one computer dosnt make a large dent in the amount of work we get done here overall but if you think of it if every one of us managed to get one more person in the movement of cruncing even if they only stayed for a short time.. it might make a cure for a vital disease even 1 day sooner.

i dont know the amount of people who die of each disease we are crunching a day but if its a loved one to you... how much is 1 day sooner to a cure worth or even 1 day to better health worth. that is why i crunch with as much as i can.

and that is why i am so glad you are all here to help me cure everything one disease at a time and knowing that everyone contribution might be the one that managed to make life better.

sorry for going off on a tangent but welcome back oliverstirling
