Hi JP,

It was the 'Recent News' link which must have been down or being updated confused

Either-way, it's working fine now. Sorry ! d oh

Q. Does WCG agent actually back off when I open a hungry application, and therefore not interfere with the computer operating at full potential ?

Re: Getting more users.

Q. Does WCG agent actually back off when I open a hungry application, and therefore not interfere with the computer operating at full potential ?

CPU wise, yes, the science applications (BOINC itself does not matter much from this viewpoint) will stop.
But if your application is so hungry that several Gigs of RAM need to be swapped you might probably notice it.
Once it's done there should be no difference if your use of this hungry application is sustained.
If the CPU needs of your hungry application are low, or if you make long enough pauses science applications will get the remaining CPU time and that might cause some more swapping if your RAM is not sufficient to satisfy the needs of your application and the science applications altogether.
If you experience this behavior and if you are frequently using hungry applications of your own you will benefit from selecting projects with low RAM usage to avoid swapping. See Sekerob's "The WCG Projects, Systems Usage Matrix" to help you select projects with the smallest RAM footprint.

If my answer is not sufficient and/or you want to discuss this topic any further please start a thread of your own with a specific title to avoid going on off topic here.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Getting more users.

After reading all of these posting I have to add my 2 cents worth.

1. Most folks that run BOINC that I have talked to don't like the idea of running WCG due to the points per WU's. Bottom line here is you give more points per WU's and you will get more users. Sorry to say that in most cases once people get bit by the DC bug and start adding PC's they are looking for projects that give the most points.

2. As some have said when you try to get people that never ran a DC type program. They are a little worried about letting a program like BOINC control any type of auto up/downloading of WU's and not knowing what is going on. Mostly worried about a Virus or someone getting their personal info off the PC.

3. Then there is the cost of running a PC 24/7. With people on TV telling everyone to turn off their PC's when not needed along with any other items. Some have gone as much as giving numbers about how much power is used by a computer that runs 24/7.

4. Then there are the projects. While we are talking mostly about WCG then I will keep it it one those projects. Many times I have went to check on one of my PC's to find that it has "Locked Up" during the screen saver and nothing works but the mouse pointer when I move the mouse. I have to do a forced shutdown and reboot. Many people would not like to do that and see it as another reason not to run this type of program.

Last thing I want to be clear on is that the above was my thoughts and have nothing to do with the thoughts of my Team. (This is here because my Team name is on my sig and I don't want anyone to think that they feel the same as I).

Re: Getting more users.

There is currently another ongoing discussion The Average WCG Cruncher which can help answer most of your valid points which are indeed often mentioned..
Please keep in mind that WCG is mainly addressing these "normal crunchers" wanting to help and not DC addicts who crunch for the most credits whatever the purpose.
1. Most folks that run BOINC that I have talked to don't like the idea of running WCG due to the points per WU's. Bottom line here is you give more points per WU's and you will get more users.

WCG is following the general crediting recommendations of the BOINC project and does not want to enter this vicious circle: if it started to credit more these grids which are already crediting exaggerately for attracting DC addicts would simply raise their crediting rates.
2. As some have said when you try to get people that never ran a DC type program. They are a little worried about letting a program like BOINC control any type of auto up/downloading of WU's and not knowing what is going on. Mostly worried about a Virus or someone getting their personal info off the PC.

When this point is raised (i.e. frequently) I usually mention the fact that IBM is widely seen as paranoid about security and that, still, it installs WCG as part of the standard software it delivers to its employees' workstations.
IBM is so confident that it leaves its employees free to manage "their" WCG as they wish if they are interested (choice of teams, projects, etc...). Others are crunching in the background under the "IBM" banner without having to take care of it.
3. Then there is the cost of running a PC 24/7. With people on TV telling everyone to turn off their PC's when not needed along with any other items. Some have gone as much as giving numbers about how much power is used by a computer that runs 24/7.

Remember that "normal members" are not supposed to start running their PCs 24/7/365 if they were not already doing so before for other personal reasons.

Regarding screensaver problems I am not the best person to answer them because, like most home users with LCD displays, I do not really need one, so I don't use one.
I think that most problems are linked to particular quirks (e.g. drivers, OS, hardware,...) in those configurations but I may be wrong.
Anyway, for those who must lock their PC for security reasons (like IBM employees mentioned above) they can always (and better) use the blank screensaver of their OS, which will also save CPU cycles.

Please note that when I say that WCG is mainly addressing "normal PC users" it does not mean that it is not interested by DC addicts. It is only that it is not in this particular population that WCG is hoping to attract really new DC participants "en masse".

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Getting more users.

yes personaly i normaly just tell people not to run a screen saver program and just turn there monitor off instead... it saves your monitor and it saves energy so you can spend it doing DC projects...

Re: Getting more users.

I have turned off the ScreenSaver on all but 1 laptop. This Laptop goes everywhere I go and I do get questions about what is the Laptop doing when the Screensaver comes on. That is when I tell all I can about BOINC and WCG along with trying to get people to join my Team. Joining my Team would be great but I would love for more people just to run a BOINC/WCG project that they think is worth it!

I still think the better the credits the more people will come. Even within the BOINC projects the ones with best credits draw the most.

Come to think about it SETI@HOME has been dropping the number of credits over the years and I think has lost people because of it (and other reasons).

I was looking at rank within the WCG and at 10,372 I feel like I am at the bottom of the sea with all the sharks!

I must confess that there was a time when I was a points chaser, but putting up with poorly run projects with little scientific or academic merit got old rather quickly.

WCG, Rosetta, Einstein, QMC and SIMAP are the blue chips among the projects.
