What are the valid IP addresses and ports being used by the BOINC agent and World Community Grid for the internet connectivity required to run the application.
My firewall is reporting that wcg_hfcc_autodock_graphics_6.10_windows_intelx86 is trying to access destination IP 224.0.0.252. A whois IP address lookup report on 224.0.0.252 states that the address is part of the block 224.0.0.0 through 239.255.255.255 belonging to the Internet Assigned Names Authority in Marina Del Rey, California. I would like to know if 224.0.0.252 is a valid IP address for the BOINC agent the the World Community Grid before I authorize access. I would also like to know what ports are used by the BOINC agent. |

I think your firewall is more than a little confused, or your computer? The Graphics part of the science used by the screensaver, only talks with RPC via localhost 127.0.0.1 and port 31416 to the client.
----------------------------------------How to check. Simply pull the internet cable. But, a little googling shows that this IP 224.0.0.252 might get employed by viruses that might latch on and make themselves appear as doing innocent traffic via another application. see http://www.google.com/search?q=virus+port+224...cial&client=firefox-a Better do some serious scanning of your system. The IP and ports used by BOINC and WCG specifically: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=25668

Jeff, I'd also recommend changing your forum 'handle' - as your's looks suspiciously like an e-mail address, and, as this is a publicly viewable forum, you might start getting e-mails that you didn't wish to receive...
