HCMD2 tasks not using full CPU all the time [ Linux ]

Dear All,

I have started the HCMD2 project on two Linux machines and have encountered something weird on both of them. The programs "wcg_hcmd2_maxdo" do not continuously take 100% of the CPU. It oscillates between 100% and 0% every 2 or 3 seconds.

The 2 machines consist in :
1) Laptop with Core 2 Duo
2) Desktop machine with Dual Quad core (so 8 cores total).

For example the "uptime" program reports an average load of 6 and not of 8 on the 8 core. This "yoyo" can also been seen when looking at the CPU system monitor.

Is this something expected ?

Thanks for your help,

Clement.

Probably you have set for those two machines the maximum usage of the processors to something like 60% in the preferences of the Boinc client.
That means the tasks are running 100% for three seconds and than suspend for two seconds and so on.

Re: HCMD2 tasks not using full CPU all the time [ Linux ]

Hi,

I have just checked in the Preferences I have:
On multiprocessor systems, use at most 100.0% of the processors.

Is there any other place where I should look for such a limitation ?

Clement.

Hello ClementMenier,
Since you have not pasted Messages tab, make sure that you are not running on local preferences.

Then, on My Grid - Device Manager - selected profile make sure that you have selected
Custom Profile: I will customize my profile using the advanced options and settings
Basic Options
Use no more than: 100.0 % of processor time
Processor Usage
If you are using version 6.2 of the software, then the number of processors used will be the lesser of the two fields below. If you are using a version before 6.2, then only the 'at most' field will be used.
On multiprocessors, at most use: 8 processors
On multiprocessors, use: 100.0 % of processors

The parameter which Crystal Pellet says that it is probably set to 60 % is the above one. It does not need to be set to less than 100 % if your processor is not running too hot. Usually it is useful only for some laptops with insufficient cooling.

Cheers. Jean.

Hi,

Thanks all for the help. I finally found that the preference GUI was not as big enough to display all parameters and found the "60%" parameter. It indeed solved my problem perfectly!

Thanks again,
Clement
