Huge transfers reports

I just saw some reports from my Kaspersky firewall that got me puzzled. They tell how much data was uploaded and downloaded by two different programs: one that it recognizes as "BOINC Client" and the other as "World Community Grid for Windows".

According to them the downloads made by the "BOINC client" during the last 3 weeks were respectively 71.7mb, 62.6mb and 21.4mb, while the uploads were 1gb, 2gb (!!) and 418,7mb.

For the "World Community Grid for Windows" the downloads were 387mb, 2gb (!!) and 11mb while the uploads were respectively 8.3mb, 44.7mb and 1.2mb.

Does this make any sense? Could these reports be possibly right?

I have an average Intel Quad Core machine here.

Thanks.

Re: Huge transfers reports

Don't know, maybe kaspersky is reporting the local host communications too i.e. computer internal comms. If you look in help System Requirements you can find the sizes of upload/download per task and science software (one time per version).

Edit: Note that the WCG mean per task is taking 5.91 hours for the last 7 days. Faster machines will obviously do more tasks per day per core.

Re: Huge transfers reports

I noticed something similar too, but with my VPN client. It was occasionally reporting large uploads/downloads being performed.

It turned out that the Boinc client was doing some internal comms, I can't remember what with off hand, possibly the Boinc manager. It was all going through the localhost, so not leaving the machine, but was being detected as upload/download operations.

This could be similar, with Kaspersky reporting the internal comms over the localhost ...

Hmm, would guess "World Community Grid for Windows", WCGfW for short, is whatever WCG is calling the customized BOINC Manager...

If so, WCGfW is doing zero internet-connections, if you're not monitoring from a remote computer, and what Kaspersky is reporting is the internal traffic between BOINC client and WCGfW.

According to them the downloads made by the "BOINC client" during the last 3 weeks were respectively 71.7mb, 62.6mb and 21.4mb, while the uploads were 1gb, 2gb (!!) and 418,7mb.

If WCGfW is the Manager, and you're constantly running the Manager, any "downloads" to it corresponds to "uploads" from BOINC client. So, whatever is the difference between these two numbers, is the actual internet-"upload" from BOINC Client.

Based on your numbers, it's roughly 637 MB, zero MB and 407.7 MB uploaded to internet.

If your quad does the 1 MB-upload-projects, and uses 6 hours/wu, you'll get 336 MB upload for 3 weeks. If also does some Clean Energy, there's no problem hitting 1 GB transferred in 3 weeks.
