CEP with Intel i7

For those out there with an Intel i7...how long does it normally take it to crunch a CEP WU with HyperThreading on?

I just ordered a i7-920 rig with 6GB of RAM. It'll be here next week but just wanted to get an idea on it's speed. I know it has to be faster than my current reliable cruncher which is a 2.8GHz P4 HT...it takes it about 18 - 20 hours per WU.

Re: CEP with Intel i7

Hello Knightro2

Just based on the CEP's I currently show in results status my times are:

Low - 6.9 hrs, High - 8.3 hrs, Ave - 7.68 hrs

This is with a i7-920 2.67 GHz HyperThreaded running Vista Home Premiun 64 bit service pack 2, and WCG recommended Bonic 6.2.28.

You won't need all your 6GB RAM, I have 12GB and I generally run at about mid to low 25% RAM to Max of about 30% RAM i.e. 3-4 GB max.

Hope this helps and good luck with your crunching, with your old system I would assume you got about 4 WU done a day on average, if you run your system 24/7 expect about 40 WU per day.

Re: CEP with Intel i7

Hi Knightro2

I have (2) I7 P920's crunching. Same hardware config for both, one running Vista Business 32 bit and the other Vista Ultimate 64 bit, both at service pack 2 BOINC 6.2.28.

Hardware: I7 P920 2.67 GHz HyperTreaded (running 8 tasks), 6GB RAM, BOINC set for 100% CPU, both do other work than BOINC most business hours and all run multiple WWG projects.

64 bit 04/11/09-06/15/09 WU=199 min=2.60 max=15.27 avg=7.97
32 bit 05/19/09-06/15/09 WU=135 min=3.84 max=13.70 avg=7.93

Comparison to some dual core machines crunching; (2) AMD4800+ and (1) C2D e6750 all running WinXP Pro SP3, 2GB RAM over same time period, same BOINC setting and other work.

AMD4800+
(1) 12/07/08-06/15/09 WU=54 min=5.01 max=20.49 avg=8.43
(2) 12/05/08-06/15/09 WU=57 min=4.78 max=15.07 avg=7.90

E6750
12/14/08-06/15/09 WU=38 min=3.18 max=11.79 avg=6.87

Some notes:
I only looked at results that were Pending Validation, Inconclusive or Valid.
The E6750 was out of commission for 2 weeks so the WU count is low.

Looks to me like the E6750 gets the job done faster and othe than that individual WU times are about the same. The difference seems to be "luck of the draw" and that the I7's pump out a lot more work using the same core time.

Hope that provides information you are looking for!

Can anyone tell me where I can get information on the I7? Would it be practical for me to replace my quad core Intel with an I7? What are the advantages?

Thanks

Re: CEP with Intel i7

Try this link...it has comparisons.
http://www.intel.com/consumer/rating.htm?iid=learn+processor_ratings

If you already have a quad-core I personally wouldn't upgrade. I finally got fed up with my current computer. It's a "frankenstein" machine that dates back to 1999 when I started on it. I kept upgrading components over time. It is a single core 2.8 GHz (no Hyperthreading) with 1.5GB of RAM. I always said the next time I need to upgrade I'm just going to buy a full computer and start over. Well...that time came last Monday night when I got so fed up with it I kicked it (I'm not a violent guy). So at the urging of my wife...I decided to splurge a little and get a computer that will last me atleast 5 - 6 years with minimal upgrades (this is why I love her). I went with the i7 because it is the latest desktop proc and a new socket size that will be around for awhile.

Re: CEP with Intel i7

I just brought a new i7-920 system up. Expect CE processes to be 7-9 hours. And it can run 8 tasks at once. biggrin

Here are the results of an I7 920 running Ubuntu 64. Usually between 8 and 9 hours. Remeber it does 8 tasks at onece.

I assume you mean just replacing the processor. No, that won't work. Core 2 Quad is socket 775 and Core i7 is socket 1366, so they are not physically compatible. You would need a new mother board if you wanted to put the i7 in the same system.

Core i7 is faster clock-for-clock than the quad and has hyper-threading that works decently well (so it appears to have 8 cores and you can run 8 WUs concurrently). On the other hand, it's 130w TDP, compared to around 95w for most quads so it uses more power and requires more cooling.
