Newegg.com is where I purchase all my computer components. TigerDirect.com is good too. They have mobo/cpu bundles.

Another place to buy and configure a computer is http://magicmicro.com/
I haven't bought from them yet but my friend who is an experienced computer tech recommends them. I like my Dell but found that many parts are made specifically for a Dell and cannot be interchanged. I found that when I had to buy a replacement power supply for my 400SC Server. The power supplies are wired differently and if you plug a Dell PS into a non Dell mother board you will fry it. |

I don't know why I can't find any topic about it, but I would like to see a good comparison of Intel i7 and Amd Phenom II x4 crunching wcg projects. Is there huge difference, or which of them actually crunches more if you ignore cpu time?

i7 920 with HT on is the best cruncher yet although some preliminary reports say that the new i7 860 and i7 870 if overclocked to the same speed as the 920 perform the same with a minor savings in energy (really minor).

I have an I7 920 clocked at 3.75ghz and I can do 8 projects(Cancer and Aids) in 4 hours. Is that good?

I have an I7 920 clocked at 3.75ghz and I can do 8 projects(Cancer and Aids) in 4 hours. Is that good? Which operating system are you using? At this speed and with a 64-bit OS I would expect the HCC tasks to be much shorter than 4 hours And even the FAAH ones, but they are usually running longer than HCC.If you use a 32-bit system it's OK I think. Cheers, and welcome to our forum. Jean. |

I had done a quick comparison with my times on a Q6600 at 2.88 GHz (3.20 hours for HCC).
----------------------------------------I had just forgotten that the i7 threads are HT threads and that individual task durations cannot be compared directly. After doing a serious computation of a daily throughput your results are in line, assuming a HT benefit of 30 % versus a non HT machine. Sorry for having worried you. Jean. ![]() |
