HFCC appears to be causing my Mac to crash

iMac 2.4GHz duo, 10.5.7.

Ran Help Conquer Cancer for months with no problems.

Switched to HFCC and system restarted every few hours. (Never while I was present though.) I knew because it was stuck at the system logon password when I'd return. I removed the password so it wouldn't stop there, but then system log showed it had been restarting every few hours.

Recently switched to HCMD2, and once the HFCC units completed, system has stopped crashing.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening? Anything I can do to fix it? (I don't want to become an expert at this stuff, I just want to help the number-crunching, so please keep it simple.)

Thanks,
Rich, in Utah

Re: HFCC appears to be causing my Mac to crash

My first thought would be heat.
Maybe the HFCC process is heating up the processor too much and it is activating the fail safe and shutting down the system.
I don't know anything about Macs, sorry.
Maybe someone else will have some better ideas. But until then I would deselect the HFCC project for that computer.

You should watch your temperature when you run a project when no problem occurs and when it shutdowns. I vote for temperature too. Just lower your % in preferences. For example if its 60%, then 40%, and so on. And watch the temperature.

I have also found that one desktop is more sensitive to certain projects. I can connect that device to a different BOINC profile, and set the project mix accordingly to drop that one from the mix on that computer.

Re: HFCC appears to be causing my Mac to crash

Do the other Autodock projects (FAAH, DDDT, IADS) cause it to crash?

Ok, but which percentage is the one to tweak? And on a Mac how does one "watch" the temperature?

I haven't been able to figure out how to connect to different profiles. I can create the default/work/home/school profiles just fine, but where do you specify which one to use?

The secret is to select the Custom radio button. Don't know the history why the project selection is obscured this way.

Re: HFCC appears to be causing my Mac to crash

Advanced | Properties... | processor usage | "Use at most __% CPU time"

I adjust the percentage to try to keep the fan speeds at a modest speed.

The best way I have found to watch the temperatures and fan speeds on the Mac is with the iStat dashboard widget (donation ware).

iStatPro

Load "SMC Fan Control" for intel MACs. It will show you the temp and adjust your fan speed accordingly.
