How do I edit my XML files (which one?) I have managed to get the only downloaded WU to be running (will finish with the hour of CPU time). Can't get it to download any other WUs. My BOINC isn't .2%

The stats are probably screwing it up, as it suddenly thought it was August 8th.

BOINC ver 5.10.30 (PC wont run a newwer version)

Re: corrupt xml config files?

Hi Patrick, as a starter, I'd suggest that you clear your local preferences file - so that all the changes are taken from the one place (and thus, confusion doesn't reign).

To do this, from your BOINC Manager program, select the Advance drop down menu, Preferences, and then press the 'Clear' button. After this, refresh your settings by going to the Projects tab and pressing 'Update'.

This will ensure that, whatever you've set on the WCG website, will take effect.

As to actually modifying your XML files, that's something that I've never done before (whenever mine has got confused, I've just let BOINC run and clear itself). Thus, if you really wish to do this, I'll leave the instructions for someone who's already done it. BTW, I'm presuming that you've already checked the FAQ's for instructions on how to do this???? biggrin

Normally it's best to just let BOINC auto-correct itself, but the problem with so old BOINC client is, it won't fix itself until after you've passed the "wrong" date... and waiting until 08.08 is too long...

To fix, shutdown BOINC-client, make sure it's really shut down (check Task Manager).

Navigate to your BOINC-directory, default would be "c:\program files\boinc" and open-up client_state.xml in notepad.

At the start of this file, there's a <host_info> - block with various info, followed by a <time_stats> - block.

In my experience the easiest is to just delete the whole block, this would mean everything from <time_stats> to </time_stats> (7 lines total), save client_state.xml, and re-start BOINC.

It's also possible to manually edit the lines, so <on_frac>, <active_frac> and <cpu_efficiency> is 0.99something, but if you're using this method make sure to also edit <last_update> to 12450something (make sure it's 10 numbers total).

What computer do you have? I'm using the latest BOINC version on a Pentium-III with Windows 2000 without problems.

This seems strange. Why BOINC is only "on 0.2%" of the time?

P4 Windows2000Pro SP4. Tried a newwer version sometime ago, but found that it didn't report completed WUs properly.

Because the stats suddenly gave 1 figure for 8/Aug, therefore no other results for 2 months (because at the time it should have been 8/Jun), the client thought it was only 0.2% of the time.

Where did you get that version of boinc from? If you got it from here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ then you can often find yourself with a beta version that hasn't been tested properly. For the latest WCG approved version go to the WCG home page and click download now. This will give you the latest version of Boinc that has been tested by the Tech's and CA's for compatibility and shouldn't give you any trouble.

Yes, 5.10.30 is not very good at recovering from wrong date entries. You can hack per the Ingleside way, or set No New Work in the project tab, finish the jobs you have, exit BOINC completely, find all files that have a name starting with client_state...xml and delete those, then restart BOINC which will recreate those files cleanly without the warped scheduling and activity information.

Optimal is though to do the delete part of these client_state....xml files and upgrade to 6.2.28, but at least the WCG 5.10.45 version. Download links for current and previous WCG versions in this FAQ: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16642

5.10.30 was a short-lived release.

Deleting client_state.xml can have major disadvantages, if multi-core you'll never have more than one wu per BOINC-project with so screwed-up stats, you'll lose your proxy-settings (if uses any), you'll lose the duration_correction_factor (albeit if you're only running WCG this can fluctuate a lot anyway so...), and if multi-project you'll screw-up long-term-debt.

Oh, and if multi-core and multi-project there if one of the other projects is CPDN and you've just started on a model taking a couple months, waiting until it's finished while the other cores sits idle is a huge waste of cpu-resources...

Not sure why, but some users "likes" v5.10.30 and don't want to upgrade to v5.10.45, even v5.10.45 did include various bug-fixes...

BTW, as far as screwed-up time-stats goes, it's no difference between v6.2.28 and v5.10.xx. v6.6.xx on the other hand correctly handles times set into the future:

15.06.2009 16:00:12 [error] bad value 1345071018.075678 of time stats last update; ignoring

Re: corrupt xml config files?

Only run WCG on BOINC 5.10.30
P4, so not multi-core PC.
Previously upgraded to BOINC ver 6.whatever. - Downgraded as ver 6 didn't work on my PC for some reason. (after processing a weeks worth of differant project WUs that all failed, I gave up and went back to a version that did work)

I'm sure I can live with the current problem for the next 2 months, while it sorts itself out. Still processing WUs, even if it doesn't give me any spare in the buffer.
