I just installed Boinc 6.2.28. It seems that after every time that the computer goes to sleep, because of an Energy Saving setting, when it comes back up, Vista SP2 crashes with a Blue Screen of Death. This happens consistently, every time. Is there anything to do, short of turning Energy Saving settings off completely?

Blue Screens usually indicate other deeper issues, so suggest some diagnostics and running a Vista repair.
----------------------------------------You don't post how BOINC itself is set up... Power Saving pre-set Profile? Can you copy/paste a piece of the message log, where it automatically goes to suspend computation and what's logged afterwards when recovering from a Blue screen. Personally, I've never used the ACPI Energy Saving settings on desktops to let them go into hibernation/sleep mode. When ever the UPS does a orderly shut down and my Vista quad resumes, things work fine, except sometimes the fans first going into full action for a little bit.

I am not sure how to answer your question, but I didn´t touch any setting after installation, so the Boinc client is as it is out-of-the-box.
I have never, ever, gotten a blue screen until I installed Boinc, so I can say with some certainty that the crash is caused by Boinc, probably coupled with the very flawed power saving feature of Windows Vista, which is infamous for causing problems. It seems that the log gets reset every time after a crash (last crash was about one hour ago, and tehre´s no mention of it in the log), so I don´t think there´s anything significant in it, but this is a paste of the message log, as it is right now (11:17:49 AM was the time of the last reboot after the latest crash): 06/10/09 11:17:49 AM||Starting BOINC client version 6.2.28 for windows_intelx86 06/10/09 11:17:49 AM||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 06/10/09 11:17:49 AM||Libraries: libcurl/7.19.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8i zlib/1.2.3 06/10/09 11:17:49 AM||Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC 06/10/09 11:17:49 AM||Running under account Jose L. If you go to
----------------------------------------Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC You can find all the messages prior and current in the stdoutdae.txt file. There you can see what happens with BOINC before during shutdown. Never knew how bad it is with Vista. When manually hibernating and coming out, it's not the smoothest experience, screaming fans, needing to mouse to do a new log in sequence to get the Bluetooth Keyboard to work again, but that's about it, oh yes and the pest of it keep telling me I've got knew hardware (bluetooth mouse), so having to tell it to validate else it never goes away. But, I've got the latest W7 RC1 image to burn and take a test ride till March 2010 (thereafter you just get 2 hours per session). Higher hopes for this OS. Added: Oh yes, out of the box, go to My Grid > Device Manager > Click the profile next to the device and see which pre-set is selected. Not sure but standard is the default. Change to Maximum Performance and your Energy Saving shutdown will never kick in, long as BOINC runs. Do force an Update in the BOINC Manager Client Project tab, so it fetches the newly assigned profile.

I looked at the stoutdae.txt file, and it seems that since it is Windows that crashed, BOINC doesn´t even see the crash, because I can´t see any traces on this log around the time of the crashes. I am not attaching that file here, because I don´t see that there is a way to attach a file on this forum, and this one is a little long.
Today, I tried turning off the Energy Savings in Windows; so, only the Screen Saver is active. It still crashed to a Blue Screen when woken up, so it´s not the Windows sleeping that does it. So, I changed the setting you mentioned to "Power Savings" to see if that makes a difference, since I already turned off Energy Savings at the Windows level. Frankly, I am close to uninstalling BOINC... |

We might get closer... the BOINC Screen Saver? If so, change it to some other.

If you get a chance, take a look at the message on the BSOD. Normally it will identify the cause of the problem. If turning the screen saver off doesn't work take a look at the blue screen to see if a file name is indicated. You can do this by going right clicking my computer selecting properties, then click on advanced settings, continue, then startup and recovery settings. From here you can stop the system restarting in the event of a system error by unchecking the auto restart box. If you see the words nvidia or ati in the error message its most likely a graphics driver problem.

Well, it seems that changing the BOINC setting to "Power Savings" made all the difference. Since I made that change I didn´t get another BSOD, with or without the Screen Saver, and with or without Energy Savings set on my computer. I´ll report any further problems.

Sekerob,
Depending on your operating system and location, you can buy Windows 7 home upgrade for $50 and the business ed. for $100, only until July 11. I'm running the rc now and not having any issues. Pat |
