I received a message that a new version of boinc 6.6.31 was available at boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php. I installed the boinc but now wcg does not start up on my computer, and I don't see it in my list of programs.

I've had this problem before, unless you tick the option at the end of the installation program to start boinc manager you have to search for the boinc.exe file in the installation folder. By default it is set to C:\program files\boinc or C:\program files(x86)\boinc, depending on your os. If it is not set to startup automatically you can move the boinc.exe file to the startup folder on the start menu.

Se Parle,
----------------------------------------There are more than a few problems with 6.6.31, such as not stopping when you tell it to... My recommendation is to uninstall, check if the cc_config.xml file still exists in the data_dir of BOINC (see message log) and delete it. Then fetch the WCG package for reinstall (My Grid > Download Again). That version will only tell you of a new version if WCG has tested it. oliverstirling, never move executables to the startup folder. Create a shortcut and move it there, else BOINC will have issues. edit: corrected version number

I did the uninstall, not sure on how to proceed with the second step regarding the config file. I don't see a data_dir in the BOINC folder.

The data dir info WAS in the message log. If you're on Vista it is probably C:\ProgramData\BOINC where the data resides. Do a file search. But, since you don't know where it is, you probably never modified it by hand, so in all likelihood it does not exist. If it were manually changed, the WCG installer wont add the special lines.
