Re: Device Profiles

but aside from that even if you manage to for instance link by hack the HCMD2 profile to a device, you wont be getting any HCMD2 exclusive work. The distribution system at WCG has no knowledge about them.

I don't think this is true, as you see from the above screenshot, WCG recognises that profile ("test"), and the machine receives HCMD2 WU's only (the profile is set to crunch HCMD2 only, and with the "If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from another project" option unchecked).

Edit: Oh yes, this kind of profiles can be removed in the way you remove the normal ones, too (by clicking the delete button in the config page of the device profile in question).

Re: Device Profiles

Thing is Moonian, you say "save locally". So did you do the test clearing cache and changing browser for a revisit, for I'm still not convinced that the profile was saved at the WCG website itself.

Now, on the global settings that may work saving it locally, but project selections wont. That part stays on the website, it was just integrated into the device profile pages, but the BOINC client itself is ignorant of the fact. It just knows WCG is attached.

Edit: Oh, I just did it myself, very weird, even sticks if exiting Firefox deleting forms history.

https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/devi...nfiguration.do?name=HCMD2

Who knows did WCG decide to toss the BOINC standards and go it alone on this one and gosh it even shows up in the IE browser, which should be looking at a different cache ;>)

One last acid test and you might have convinced me. Change that test profile to fetch FLU instead, specifically switch of the alternate work button and see what happens [what is your default profile project selection in that respect currently?]

Re: Device Profiles

Actually, CREATING the profile itself doesn't need to save the config page locally. Only when APPLYING the profile to a device does (only because the dropdown box doesn't show those options).

As for that "acid test", I will post the results ASAP when I have the opportunity to reach that machine again. My current default profile is "home", which chooses to run everything but FAAH, with "send alternate work" off and "opt in new projects" on. The "test" profile (runs HCMD2 only, no alternative work) is just used for a slow machine.

Re: Device Profiles

laughing
I would have sworn that it was not possible to do this.

Thinking about it, WCG was set up to handle any number of named profiles for UD, then had BOINC added to it with only 3 pre-named profiles (venues). Then we modified the website some more to allow project lists to be stored with each profile (venue). I expect that whatever is happening is using the WCG code rather than the standard BOINC code.

biggrin Something for knreed to explain!

Re: Device Profiles

Well, went to another machine and called up Device Profiles and sure it showed. It could be that lawrence, UD legacy
and as simple as changing the browser web address to create the record laughing shhh

I believe that could be the reason for WCG's situation to be different from other BOINC projects'.

==================================
By the way, I decided to do the test on another machine so that Sekerob can have an earlier glimpse of the test result wink .

Here is what I did:
1. In the config page of the profile "test", change it to crunch FLU only.
2. Go to the Device Configuration page of the abovementioned machine, save it locally, edit, save and run the HTML file, so the device now have the "test" profile applied to it instead of its original "home" profile.
3. In the BOINC Manager of the said machine, increase buffer size from 0.25 days to 2 days (to force the machine asks for a WU, as it had just fetched one not long before).
4. Result:

5. Revert everything from Steps 1 to 3, and then click the Update button in the BOINC Manager. Result:

Hope this helps smile

Edit: fixed a typo

Re: Device Profiles

Well that was illuminating, Moonian applause. If the techs see something that can be kept, maybe they make an additional change so they show in the drop down list. The preferences keep the March 29 change date in the log for now with this hack method, not exactly for the feeble for sure.

Reverting to Home started pulling that profiles projects? The last blue bordered box seems to be the same task as the shot before that.

cheers and thanks for convincing me wink

You're welcome Sekerob smile

Yes, the "FLU stuff" in those both shots refer to the same task. I didn't try pulling WU's again after reverting, as it's just a P4-HT (runs at most 50% of the number of CPUs), I didn't wish to pull too many WUs. However, if you wish to see what happens (after increasing the work buffer again temporarily):

So yeah, everything's back to normal smile

Re: Device Profiles

{snip} ... save the Device Configuration page of that profile as a normal HTML file to your local machine, open it with a text editor and add that profile entry to that dropdown box in the form (and modify the path of the Save button too, as it contains a relative path instead of an absolute one).
... {mo' snip}

The Save button part gave me the most trouble.
If anyone is documenting this procedure, the line that's on is
<form name="deviceConfigurationBean" method="post" action="/ms/device/processDeviceConfiguration.do">

I had to change that to
<form name="deviceConfigurationBean" method="post" action="https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/devi...onfiguration.do">

I suppose that could be different for non-windows devices?

Only a few lines below that is the code for the picklist,
where I pasted in

<option value="CustomProfile1">CustomProfile1</option>

<option value="CustomProfile2">CustomProfile2</option>

<option value="CustomProfile3">CustomProfile3</option>

<option value="CustomProfile4">CustomProfile4</option>

(et cetera, where "CustomProfile#" matched the names of the profiles I had created in the Device Profile manager.)

After the 'default' option and just prior to the /select tag.

I was hoping one of the 'experts' could tell us there was simple way to do it by just using the <host_venue> flag in the state file(s) or something, but apparently that's not possible.

It's a rather-slow process... I've only done 2 of my 7 devices, and I'm going to delay finishing as I'm about to replace the slowest device I have with a quad-core + cuda GPU. I thought naming the profiles after the tasks would be easier to keep straight than naming them after the devices which could die and be replaced tomorrow. Possibly I'll install linux on that 'slow' device (1.8GHz, 1GB, 256MB Radeon 9800) if they ever stop pushing back the release of fedora 11.

Anyway, thanks so much Moonian, for taking the time to work on this. A kludge is better than nothing.
