Question About Moving BOINC Folders

Hi,

I am running the 6.2.28 client under Windows Vista (32 bit). The client is installed in 2 folders on the c: drive:
C:\
--->BOINC
--->BOINC Data

I am going to upgrade the OS to Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I would also like to change the folder structure to:
C:\
--->WWG
------>BOINC
------>BOINC Data

I would like to do this using the same device ID, that is I don't want to have another device id generated.

Does anyone know if the following will work?

1. Back up BOINC folders
2. Install new OS (new install not upgrade in place)
3. Install BOINC using new folder structure
4. Shut down client
5. Delete all files in client data folder
6. Copy contents of backed up data folder to new folder

My primary concern is that I don't want to screw up any of the "pointers" the client keeps to device id, data folder, etc.

Thank you in advance for any assistance/advice!

Bill P

While your method will work, I'll recommend a slightly different method:
1; Backup BOINC data-directory (and it's sub-folders).
2; Install new OS.
3; Copy backup-version of BOINC data-directory to it's new location.
4; Install BOINC.

The main reason to install backup-copy before installing BOINC is to make sure the access-rights doesn't get screwed-up, since BOINC-installation should configure these correctly... atleast they will in recent BOINC-clients...

For #1, you don't need to backup the BOINC-directory, only the data-directories, since this will only include the BOINC-client-executables, and will anyway be re-installed. BTW, just as an extra precaution against errors, it's an idea to set client to "Network activity suspended" before making the backup-copy.

Ingleside,

Thank you! Being somewhat new to Vista I hadn't thought about access rights. I will follow your advice.

Re: Question About Moving BOINC Folders

BOINC has shown an outstanding capacity to loose the complete data store during migrations and upgrades since version 6 forces the data_dir not to be in a sub of the program dir. So since, I am forcing/ensuring it to look in the place I want it to be by adding a line to the <options> section of the cc_config.xml which is

<data_dir>C:\ProgramData\BOINC</data_dir>

This option was originally created to manually allow the placement outside the Program Files structure, where application data does not belong. It has not lost it's function yet. The BFS, a good external BOINC information source extends to show which files to place where. http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?view=292

Good for those who wish to have total control :D

Re: Question About Moving BOINC Folders

Normal BOINC installations use the registry to keep track of where the data directory is. While this works excellently in normal use, it can go wrong when people try to change things manually.

The settings which take precedence are entirely undocumented, so it is best not to have conflicting settings.

Tried migrating my data directory using the info on this link: http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?view=292
Ultimately though its easier to copy the data directory to wherever you want it to be then install an updated version of boinc, specifying the data directory through the advanced settings of the installer.

Re: Question About Moving BOINC Folders

1. Back up BOINC folders
2. Install new OS
3. Install BOINC
4. Shut down client
5. Overwrite all files in BOINC folder by old ones

I was reinstalling my XP for 64-bit version and I did it as described above. After this all is same as before. Afterwards I decided to upgrade my BOINC client to latest supported by WCG so I call up repair installation. Now I have 6.2.28 runining properly.

Thank you guys for ideas!

Re: Question About Moving BOINC Folders

Put a

0a. Set Network option in BOINC to suspend
0b. Suspend computing in Activity Menu
0c. Exit BOINC completely

Also somewhere in the procedure the Network should be suspended prior to restore, ideally internet unhooked. The danger of installing BOINC and it then communicating with the servers and the servers inadvertently recognizing the host, the harm is done. The WCG installer will attach WCG automatically hence the risk of client/server interaction.

Maybe overcautious, but loosing jobs running for longer is more upsetting.
