personaly i think the best computer is ANY computer already out there that is not runing BOINC and/or WCG.
----------------------------------------if you can convince someone who is not using distributed computering to start to then that is the best... as for new computers personaly i dont have tons of money so i normaly go for what will do my needs/wants then add boinc to it I personaly do not stay on the cutting edge of high technology but closer to the blunt edge. i also believe for the same price/power you might be able to get multiple computers for the same price of the absolute top of the line and all together the multi computers will crunch with more power oh if your geting rid of your old computer see if someone needs them or is willing to use them.. I know alot of people out there that wouldnt mind a computer that still uses Windows 98 and is functonal cause thats all they need and they dont have the cash to get any computer. again the best is a computer already running that isnt running a DC project ![]() |

I agree with you in everything about crunching with machines that are not already crunching, getting other people to crunch and donating your old equipment to someone (or an institution) that is not fortunate enough to have the money to buy a machine themselves.
i also believe for the same price/power you might be able to get multiple computers for the same price of the absolute top of the line and all together the multi computers will crunch with more power ... you will save money on both equipment purchases and overall electricity bills if you buy one big machine rather than a bunch of small ones. ![]() |

Two gig of memory works fine for 8 core as long as you stay away from Vista. Use Xp and 2 gig is plenty.
----------------------------------------as to the best machine for the dollars invested I'd have to say a Intel i7-920 cpu, "good" quality X58 board from gigabyte, evga, etc and 3x1 gig DDR3-1333 or better. Get a TRUE HS, a good 550+w PSU and your in business. Set it up right and it will do 30,000PPD in WCG ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Movieman at Jun 2, 2009 12:02:20 AM] |
