Re: HCMD2 Project Announcement Incomplete?

According to Sekerob's HCMD2 crunching chart it would appear that average daily CPU years has risen from ~16CPU years/day to ~23 CPU years/day since the e-mail announcement went to WCG members.

The effect was not "immediate" and may be purely coincidental, but I think not personally...

Re: HCMD2 Project Announcement Incomplete?

Doug,

There's surely the internal "preferred project" changes members have applied post receipt of the email, those who do not have the auto-opt in ticked, but several things are at play in addition:

- The project is slowly moving up to the point where more work is put into the feeders, each job running on average longer. certainly 100,000 tasks to get 16 CPU years put substantial pressure on the system.
- We continue to see good numbers in new arrivals, 1519 volunteers were added in the last 7 days. From joining to validating always takes a few days.
- Most work was hoovered up by those on the ball and wanting to do their badge for gold, leaving very little to go to the general pool. Once the longer jobs are prevailing more will be done by 'all project' crunchers.
- More odd and hard to fathom, is the proportional high TFL compared to CPU time suggesting proportionally faster hardware is contributing to HCMD2. Nice if so.

But yes, it's nice to see the step change all this has worked, 25 CPU years yesterday (9.25% of 270 total), but more so, 33 TFL yesterday (10.7% of 307 TFL), very close to 1/9th of the contributed computational power with 9 concurrent projects. This one will grow no doubt. Summer season is approaching so don't be disappointed that later this month / next month things slow down till the next growth period after September starts.

It shouldn't be too hard to fathom. At the very beginning you have a large amount of badge hunters trying for their 90 CPU days (well, large amount compared to current MD2 crunchers as a whole). Those who take crunching out the 90 days in the shortest amount of time seriously are obviously going to have better machines than the guy down at the bank who is crunching because the corporate IT folks put BOINC/WCG on his machine.

Once the badge hunting settles down you should start to see a more accurate representation of the power of the hardware working on the project.

Summer season is approaching so don't be disappointed that later this month / next month things slow down till the next growth period after September starts.

Similarly, with schools closing down for the summer, it shouldn't be too surprising that things are relatively flat until school starts back up again. Also that group has the free time available to constantly fiddle with/tweak both their results & (if they have the interest to do so) their hardware as well.

Re: HCMD2 Project Announcement Incomplete?

In context of previous start up project data, the HCMD2 one is extraordinarily high and in fact is going in another chart through the graph ceiling. Let me though refer you to all the charts in the link below and then feel free to fill in any gaps left in the analysis smile
