I have a question here regarding the long awaited HCMD2, which has obviously begun recently.
There was a lot made about not letting the cat out of the bag on release date due to the communication plan. Now please don't get me wrong here. I am not trying to be critical. I am just trying to understand if more is coming... When Help Fight Childhood Cancer and Influenza went live (and others I have seen previously) I saw press releases that made it to Yahoo!Financial News under IBM and I also got some notices to my WCG listed e-mail stating that a new project had begun and to please check it out for consideration. As Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy has hit within my own home for my son Eric, I have watched quite closely and anxiously. I have neither seen WCG e-mail regarding this project nor press releases on Yahoo!Financial News. Is there more coming here or did announcements somehow not get out fully? |

From the member increase counts and production number, this project has had a very good uptake, even better than Clean Energy, suggesting Yahoo!Financial News is not the portal to reach most (not me for sure).
----------------------------------------Anyway, there's a newsletter to go out shortly at which time the remaining job sizing issues should be resolved for the most part. Saw a few news link referring to this project, so unless someone else is quicker, I'll carry them here. cheers

Well, I wasn't specifically proposing targeting Yahoo!Financial, but my point there was that the other announcements got picked up on widely available news wires; enough to even be highlighted in financial news reporting locations. That would seem to be pretty wide coverage statement.
I am very happy that the uptake here has been strong. I am fully dedicated to it with all of my systems. The HCMD project has been idle for quite some time though and I believe would benefit from wider announcements like the other referenced projects; particularly since the first estimate to my question a number of weeks back was that it would take 1.2M new users running HCMD2 to cut the compute time in half (roughly). In fact, this is such an undertaking that I believe it should get such an announcement to WCG members and outside new feeds for the MANY who are not aware and are untapped resources. |

The IADS press release was widely circulated, but I didn't see a single news outlet that actually picked up the story and reported on it.
I expect much of the HCMD publicity will be in French. I have seen a couple of stories (in French), but little in English. |

Word of mouth, by those of us all ready crunching, helps also. The more you vocalize this too your own daily contacts, the more potential crunchers sign up. Make calls, send e-mails, and let your friends, family, and co-workers know. I have found that some are weary of WCG or similar applications, but once I explain the process, they are more likely to join. IMHO, I think the personal connection is more beneficial in getting others to join than public announcements.

its always hard for me to convince people to run a program that contacts the internet and doenloads files without there consent for that file...
----------------------------------------but i am doing my best to ensure people i work with understand what distributed computing is and also make sure that they know when new projects come out Honestly i dont know if any of them is running these programs at home but they are informed about what they can do to help right now im running HCMD2 Solid untill i think i have enough forgold then i will transfer back over to flu till i have gold then back out to ALL projects as for anouncements they are out there to people who do Distributed computing and show up on multiple websites deling with distributed computing... corse i dont know how the spread is to Muscular distrophy sites.. Heck if you know of any of those you might mention it in there forums and mabey a few more people will come online with the project |

Well I am a member of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy and I already posted out there beginning ~6 weeks ahead of time, during Beta startup and again at launch. I figured if there was anyplace I could get some volunteers it would be with other DMD/BMD parents. The post has gotten lots of views, but impossible to tell about whether it has actually created new members. Security and phishing is the greatest fear people have for sure...

I see that yesterday evening (Central Time) the e-mail to WCG members actually went out notifying of the HCMD2. Obviously many knew about it already, but it is good to see the formal e-mail announcement anyway.

Obviously many knew about it already, but it is good to see the formal e-mail announcement anyway. Not so obvious. People reading the forum are a small percentage of the total participants, and for those who do not read the forum AND have an "all-projects" profile the chance to see a HCMD2 WU in their client (assuming that they look at it periodically) is very low during this startup time. Also this announcement e-mail is a good opportunity to reach members who have stopped contributing, e.g. because they were tired of waiting for this most wanted project. Cheers. Jean. |
