I'm a 6502 man myself. Who would have believed you could get the Zilog Z80 to go at 4Mhz and address 64K (yes that's K) of memory.Kids of today if you told them that - they wouldn't believe you ![]() Zilog Z80? It is the first CPU I have seen, when I was in University. Yes, I know I am old... ![]() I remember that cpu in my dad's Microbee computer though it only ran at 3Mhz if I believe and had 32K ROM memory. Those were the days, no storage and every "basic" program had to be typed from scratch Went to a 286 with CGA graphics - awesome! A little different to todays 3D stuff..... |

Then in 1967 I was hired at Sears and was trained in PL/I to program on the then new System/360 Model 40 with 64K of core memory (real core memory made up of ferrite doughnuts woven into a frame by wires which performed the functions of setting, testing and turning off a bit in memory). The operating system running on the 360 was called Primary Control Program and it was a non-multitasking system. Because of the inefficiencies of PL/I, we later switched to System/360 Assembler for our applications. You want to talk about dropping a box of cards -- how about a 2000 card assembler deck! Ah -- I remember it well ![]() |

Dave You will recognize:
----------------------------------------CLC a,b BH high BL Low BC 15,overyonder MVC a(12), b AR 6,7 XOR c,d XOR c,d XOR c,d BR 14 It has faded terribly but I used to think that instruciton set and then translate for others. |

Thanks for the welcome, I am still programming in PL/I here in Germany. IBM Main frame.

RT -- Yep -- all of it! Loved that language. You can do anything with it! Set a bit, test a bit, branch on any condition. You gotta love that. |

For the Kind Comments earlier
---------------------------------------- MOT is 90 Years old today. Should we start a new thread when we make our first century or when we make 4th? I programmed the 6502 with a hex keypad and I've wired up a Z80 minimum system with wire wrap and a smouldering iron. Good job it didn't have a 64 bit address bus... and eproms had numbers like 2732 at this time. Cards and Paper tape were used on some CNC milling machines I used while at College. It's just crazy that 256Mb is not enough to run a successful XP machine. I'm contantly amazed by the sheer number crunching power we have at our disposal today. I bought my first PC when I believed they wouldn't get any faster due to the laws of physics - it was a Pentium 133hz !!! I mean that's VHF frequencies. How wrong was I - now we seem to be able to get Microwave Frequencies down the narrowest of PCB tracks without a second thought and you can buy this motherboard technology for less than £100 The first PC I remember had a 20Mb harddrive and a 286 processor - now I've got 256Mb of storage in my mobile phone and it's the size of a postage stamp.(Mini SD card) and it has a 200Mhz processor to boot. We should have a WCG client that runs on Windows CE/Mobile I've got a pack of 10 DVD-R's on the desk costing just over £5 and I can write on them 47Gb of data. The world is a crazy place. Night Dave ![]() |
