Numerous BSOD's, Vista 64

I'm using Vista 64 on a Pentium Core i7, and ever since I started the Influenza project, my computer has been crashing in the middle of the night every couple days due to a BOINC-related error. I don't have any other projects selected except for the Clean Energy Project, and that one rarely gets run. I'm seriously considering turning off parallel computing until I am sure that whatever is causing the problem gets resolved.

What evidence do you have that it is BOINC related?

Please will you provide the details of the STOP event (you will find it in the event log if you didn't make of note when the last crash occurred).

Is your system set to do automatic updates at night, run a backup, scan the disk, defragment the drives, or is it even sitting beside a radiator in a closed room that is set to come on at night?

You may be having non-WCG and non-Boinc problems!

Try looking here:
Control Panel, System and Maintenance, Problem Reports and Solutions.

You never know, you may just have a graphics card driver issue or a printer tool update could be causing bother.

Good Luck,

Re: Numerous BSOD's, Vista 64

I don't have any automatic updates or other automatically scheduled tasks, and the Vista "recovered from an error" box that pops up on reboot definitely indicates a World Community Grid related process that caused the crash (wcg_somethingorother_###############). My computer is well ventilated and connected to a powerful UPS, so I'm pretty sure it's not a power issue. I checked the event viewer in Vista but couldn't find anything conclusive, I'm not sure what you mean by STOP event though. Unless you mean there's another event log for BOINC that I can look at; I'm not sure where the logs are kept though.

It's quite possible that it could be related to the Clean Energy Project as I have had the occasional crash before adding the flu project, but they do seem to be more frequent now.

Re: Numerous BSOD's, Vista 64

aeridus, a STOP event is a blue screen error. BOINC on its own isn't capable of crashing your computer.

I believe that BOINC is simply highlighting an existing problem your computer has. After all, since BOINC is working all the time, the probability of it being affected by your hardware problem is much higher than for other processes.

If you can't find the specific error log, then all you can do is general checks of your hardware.

I can't stress enough: this is a problem with your computer. We will try to help you as much as we can, but it's mostly up to you, now.

Re: Numerous BSOD's, Vista 64

Well, if it happens again, I'll write down the exact error code and process name Vista tells me, but in the meantime I'll just leave BOINC on all the time. I also fixed it so that Vista doesn't automatically restart upon getting a STOP error (I've always just called those BSODs), so I can see the full details. It's certainly possible that the sheer volume of calculations done through BOINC is just stressing out my hardware, and that shutting down my computer once in a while would help. Thanks for walking me through this.

Are you overclocking? If so did you check the stability of your OC with Prime95 or some other stabilty tool?

Re: Numerous BSOD's, Vista 64

I'm definitely not overclocking, I'm using the default setup for my CPU and motherboard. I do have BOINC set to use 80% of my processors 80% of the time, though.

An i7 in good working order can handle anything that the WCG projects throw at them ... if you are getting BSODs then you may want to check to make sure you have the latest drivers for your hardware. If everything seems OK from that perspective you should download Prime95 and run the Blend tests for at a minimum of 1 hour, preferrably 4-6 hours (some people will let it run overnight (8-12) hours to make sure their system is really stable. Did you build it or buy it from one of the big name retailers? Just for reference, while I am no wiz, I have been running WCG set to 100% cpu usage 24/7 on my i7 920 overclocked to 3.8 GHz, which creates a great deal more stress that the stock settings of 2.66 GHz, for a couple of months and I have no problems with WCG.

This is my build, which I put together myself: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=7725125

I'll give Prime95 a shot and see if anything happens. I know my hardware drivers are mostly up to date, including the bios and the video card.
