This is how I am trying to mitigate PV Purgatory
----------------------------------------every few hours when i have time to check and deal with my computers (4 total 5 processors) i go through and look at my IP work units 1 computer at a time and look for jobs that are completed by my wingman that i have loaded on each computer. once i have a list of them I Temporarily suspend other of my IP units untill i have ones that my Wingman has completed in running mode.. i then unsuspend the other work units.. 1 of my coputers had over 20 hours ( my estimated complete time) done by my wingman and another 10-12 hours not done yet.. so on that computer i left those not done by my wingman suspended for a few hours (as i said i check every few hours 4-10 hours) so as long as i have enough unsuspended ones set on my computer (plus a decent factor) i unsuspend the rest. my other 3 computers (4 processors total) only had 3 other ones waiting for me to complete so i got the processors working on those and then unsuspended the rest... if other people who have time and large enough backlogs of work units waiting on there computer and do this we may limit the PV heck for some other people and slide around it ourselves Currently i have 5 pages of PV I know this isn't a perfect solution but it will work in the mean time it will work for the moment edited for inappropriate language...cih ..ell isnt inappropreate in my opinion but i guess you consider it that way so im useing Purgatory now [Edit 4 times, last edit by nasher at May 18, 2009 12:06:16 AM] |

"Pending validation" is normal.
----------------------------------------There is no need for you to waste your time like this. Of course, it's your time, and you can waste it if you want. But "wasted" is the only suitable word. You are only making work for yourself. By suspending tasks, you will cause those tasks to delay their work unit validation. You can't win. This is why we use the term "micromanaging" for trying to control BOINC at this level. edited for inappropriate language...cih [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 17, 2009 11:17:01 PM] |

corse its more work.. but im not perminatly suspending them..
----------------------------------------i am only suspending them long enough to get the computer to work on the ones i want it to then i unsuspend the work units.. sure its more work. sure my computers will crunch all these work units sooner or later but for me its my way (spending a little human time dealin with my computers) to get the ones already completed by someone else out of there PV Purgatory and put a bit of priority on the jobs i want so i get the time credited NOW corse Pending validation is NORMAL but it dosnt mean i cant minimize it for me while still crunching these HCMD2's on a side note i also do this anytime i get a beta so that the work gets reported asap. im a tinkerer i need to mess with the settings.. its my blessing or curse edited for inappropriate language...cih [Edit 2 times, last edit by nasher at May 18, 2009 12:07:28 AM] |

nasher,
----------------------------------------Don't worry - you're not the only "tinkerer...", as I've done this as well, justifying it in my own head that, as my wingmen have had the decency to return WU's quickly, I'll give those priority over others that are still waiting for my wingman to crunch... Okay, I've only got the 1 dual processor computer, but still, if it is time wasted, it's MY time wasted edited for inappropriate language...cih [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 17, 2009 11:18:48 PM] |

Currently i have 5 pages of PV Why are you so worried about 75 WU? Thats a drop in the bucket. All the extra work you are doing and the extra stress you are applying is not worth the effort. Last last week I had 800+ PV and now I am down to 400+ and I didnt have to do a thing. The point the CAs are trying to make is that if all 80,000_ crunchers were to manually click update the 10-20 times a day, like you are, the entire system is going to grind to a standstill. I will accept 3 times a day because properly running system with an average 8 hour WU will update 3 times a day. Any more than that then your are stealing server time from the other crunchers. edited for inappropriate language...cih [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 17, 2009 11:19:37 PM] |

i only update manualy 2 times a day normally 5am and 5pm since the server updates at 6am/pm i do tinker with what work units i am running though that slows things down on my end not the servers.
----------------------------------------i have seen on my computers maybe i have something set wrong but i have it set to update every .1 days by BOINC i catch that it hasn't updated work units for 24+ hours sometimes and that's meaning a job has been completed for more than 24 hours since it updated. as for the fact that I personally tinker and worry about the 70+ WU's I have in PV its also because i can only possibly generate 5 days of work in a 24 hour period based on processors so for me at least those 70+ WU's are alot to me .. currently i see them ruining 2-3 hours on my computer so thats for me 5-12 days of work (2-3 physical days) yes my part may be a drop in the buket as far as you are concerned or as far as WCG is concerned or BOINC itself but for me its my contribution yes WCG is averaging 160,874 jobs per day ( 366,987 yesterday) and myself i may only be 10-100 of them... its still my work yes if the 1,260,124 computers attatched to WCG (and my load of computers count for 11 (4 active) clicked update every 2 hours yes i can see it being a problem. edited for inappropriate language...cih [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 17, 2009 11:20:24 PM] |

nasher, what you do with your time is your decision. The reason I responded was because you were recommending everyone try this, and that is just a very bad idea.

I have 21 pages of pending, I am not even going to try sorting through all of this stuff. Somewhere in that mess is my gold badge or darn close to it. I turned off the MDs for right now so I can capture a few betas and finish my year on CEP and Inful that I normally give each project before I go back to the cancer projects. Should have the silver MD tonight.
----------------------------------------I was tired of having over 200 units in the queues to process on all four quads. Didn't seem to matter that I set the days to .5. k.t. edited for inappropriate language...cih [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 17, 2009 11:21:51 PM] |

nasher, what you do with your time is your decision. The reason I responded was because you were recommending everyone try this, and that is just a very bad idea. Hehe imagine everyone did this. Then your wingmen would never deliver the results before you (cause they'd be suspending the tasks until you'd deliver), ending in a deadlock, either causing you to suspend everything, or nothing at all Not a very usefull idea, but hey, as long as it is only you and a few others, do whatever floats your boat edited for inappropriate language...cih [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 17, 2009 11:22:30 PM] |

An easier way would be to shorten your buffer so that you quickly return everything you get :-)
