Re: Problems after normal restart!

Hi KLiK,
I will start off, even though I know very little. There is a troublesome bug that sometimes shows up when NRW is running on BOINC 6 but that does not seem to show on BOINC 5.10. In the absence of any other clues, I would start by avoiding NRW on that machine and see if it works well for other projects.

This is very hit-or-miss advice on my part, but I can not think of anything else. angel

firstly, why did the BOINC 6th version get authorized, when it does not work well with current projects?

secondly, why didn't the project managers reprogram the NRW project files with newer version?

thirdly, I crunch that on old "dual P2@533 machine"...so the NRW fits perfectly with the lowest RAM consumption (only 768MB or RAM, which is max) and get calculated very quickly (in 8-10h), so the jobs gets done...

all the good facts, why should I stick with this project on that computer!

Re: Problems after normal restart!

My most recent experiences with "Zero Status" is a heartbeat issue, speak the core client has trouble staying in touch with the science. It was supposed to have been fixed with 6 and it wasn't. Something is taking allot of time away from that to happen, something that could be in the area of poor NIC or Wifi sucking up allot of retry-juice?

RICE not working on few computers in combination with the 6 client is exactly why it remains authorised. Why we have BOINC 6 is because it was supposed to provide better, more stable comms and graphics and Vista maybe... it works for most all.

RICE will always run 7 hours, no matter what hardware or OS. It's programmed to stop when that much CPU time is used, it used to be 10, then 6 CPU hours. In elapsed time, wallclock, yes I'm sure it could take 8-10 hours... no computer is the same.

So, it's small, it runs for most all flawless, thus not expecting any change to the application. Still my XP refuses for no reason to crunch RICE on client 6, but does them fine on client 5. That's why all the versions are still available for download. Too many OS/Hardware combinations with all their different installed software.

Thus, if you cant find the source of the heartbeat issue, is the AV software scanning your BOINC data dir e.g., remove NRW from the profile that machine is attached to or create a separate profile where NRW is excluded

PS. I just unplugged and replugged all the hardware to my quad and booted. The heartbeat issue for FLU only went away. No one knows why...

Re: Problems after normal restart!

Have you tried to do a simple reset on the project to see if this fixes the issue? If you do so, i would recommend that you set the project to 'no new tasks' until all of the tasks are finished. Then, 'update' the project and give it a minute to return the results. To make sure all tasks have been reported make sure your tasks are empty. Then you can try resetting the project. Taking these steps will make sure you don't lose any CPU time due to resetting the project.

I'm also curious if you have had any issues with other projects. Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy 2 should be another low memory project for you to test on.

Have you noticed any rouge processes that are taking up a fair share of resources. You can watch this by running task manager and looking at the processes tab. Then sorting by CPU usage. and see if something is using up more cpu time than you think it should. Most idle machines that are running World Community Grid on them have about 1-3% usage towards system processes. Also, you might want to sort on memory usage to see if there are any processes that are causing your machine to use the virtual memory on the machine.

What are your settings for check pointing on the machine? You may want to try setting that to 5 or 10 minutes to see if this is causing your agent some issues. RICE work units generally checkpoint every few minutes due to the speed of each calculation.

Also, if this is your only machine that is encountering this issue, you may want to try using the 5.10 client to see if this helps. As Sek mentioned, every machine is different and there may be something in the 6.x client that is causing it to not work well on your machine.

Note: All science applications are compiled against the 6.x api (which works with the 5.x clients) but this is so the graphics and the science applications work with Windows Vista.

Re: Problems after normal restart!

no, so far only RICE project has a problem!
i've allready tried to restart the WCG account, it didn't help!

i'll enable the HCMDph2 on that computer! just to see how it works...

the memory is fine...I've checked it with memTEST 86+!

the MIN disk ussage is 60s...so that is not the case...
the RICE project recognizes the last percentage, when it was written...but not the data, 'cause it cannot continue!

i'm not going back on BOINC 5...that is de-evolving! i'll wait for the next gen of BOINC, that is WCG certified...
also, it's not the Vista, that I'm woried about...all computers are WinXP!

shock Re: Problems after normal restart!

restarted the single core computer, same thing...RICE project keeps restarting!

it's a Tualatin P3@1,266, with WinXP SP3 and BOINC 6.2.28 agent running...so it's not only the dual-cores/dual-CPUs that have problems with RICE project!

Re: Problems after normal restart!

lately mine Core2Duo has the same problems with RICE jobs...it just freezes and do not calculate anymore!

and the Core2Duo machine has a variety of jobs...so it's not dual-RICE jobs, that has the problems!
