Hello,
I got a computer with three partitions or disks (I have to admit I do not really know whether I have three disks or only three partitions of one physical disk) One of them is almost full, the others are empty. Unfortunately, BOINC does not allow to take part in all projects, because of too little empty disk space. Probably BOINC only uses the partition it is installed on (the one that is almost full). Could anyone please explain to me how I can tell BOINC to use the other partitions or disks to put down data of projects? Thanks a lot in andvance. Martin |

If you run 6.2 or higher simply uninstall BOINC and reinstall, carefully reading the installer screens. One of the first few allows you to specify where to put the BOINC data directory.

When you reinstall BOINC you may reinstall it in its entirety on a separate partition and it will use that partition. You specify the location during the install process. I have one system which is done this way and it works flawlessly. Cheers

Hello,
thank you for your answers. Please note, that my installation process was different. I wanted BOINC to become a DAEMON (linux DAEMON) (in Windows words this would be called a SERVICE) As far as I know, being a DAEMON Worldcommunity Grid starts starts calculating right after starting the computer, even if I do not start the BOINC manger. I am not sure, however, if this is really true. Someone told me in this forum, that I have to install BOINC using the ability of LINUX to add programms/aplications instead of BOINCs installation manager, if I want BOINC to become a DAEMON. As far as I remember, installing BOINC with the help of LINUX application manager, you do not have the possibility to choose the disk or partition. I want BOINC to stay a DAEMON, and that is why I am not really happy about the idea to uninstall BOINC and reinstall it with the help of BOINCs installation manger instead of LInuxes application manager. But maybe I have the possibility to make BOINC a DAEMON even if I use the BOINC installation Manager instead of LINUXES installton manager? Could someone give me an answer to this question, please? Please note, that basically it is a great idea to offer BOINC in LINUXES application manager. It is easier to install and more LINUX users will get to know BOINC if it is available in LINUXes aplication manager. So please, keep it available as a LINUX application, this is a really good way of promoting BOINC. Yours Martin |

Well with OS info we've got something useful to work with. Most people use the (Synaptic) package manager to fetch and install the latest stable BOINC version the particular distro offers.
----------------------------------------Afiak, BOINC on Linux always runs as Daemon (Service in Windows speak). That way it will run even if no one logs in. The installer routine should still provide screens to choose the location for the data. Found it's default on Linux as /var/lib/boinc-client or ~/BOINC As for immediate start, the WCG package has a build in 2 minute delay on Windows so everything can load during boot before BOINC starts taking spare cycles. This way for many the loading of OS/Services/User Apps is faster. You could add the option manually to the cc_config.xml which you may have to create manually if not provided by the installer kit.

Martin,
----------------------------------------Unless you are already at ease with Linux you might consider simpler solutions to your disk space problem. Moving Boinc's data directory is a little tricky and with my basic knowledge of Ubuntu I would not try it yet. I understand that your machine is essentially a crunching machine, therefore there are probably many applications installed by Ubuntu that you will not need before long and which could be easily and safely uninstalled with Synaptic the package manager, and you would recover much disk space for Boinc. I am speaking Ubuntu language here but if you use another distro it is probably also true. Regarding the way the daemon works it is really starting while Ubuntu is booting. I have temperature monitoring on my machine and when I am able to start BoincMgr at the end of the startup phase the processor is already very close to its full speed temperature. I understand that it was your concern, not how to delay its start which is a feature I am not sure is available in 6.2.18. @Sekerob Unfortunately the installation process of Boinc with Synaptic is as simple as possible and does not offer any choice regarding where to put the data directory (or anything else either, by the way ). But at least it works well for a standard installation with enough disk space.Cheers. Jean. |

Hello,
Thanks a lot for your help. I managed to install BOINC on a second, almost empty partition and started it there. So it should have enough space now. It was quite tricky to get the machine going. I purchased the machine for relatively little money, because it was not new when I bought it. But it was a long way to get the operating system on it, I can tell you. Well, one machine of two is crunching now, at last. But with the second one, I got serious problems. Its a Fujitsu Siemens Celsius R 610 Unfortunately, this machine has not only a BIOS, but in addition an ADAPTEC SCSI select utility. And this is, where - as far as I understand - the problem starts. I managed to configure the BIOS Boot options. In the BIOS it is clear now, that the machine should boot from CD ROM (because UBUNTU Linux is on CD, and from CD it shoul be transfered to the hard disc. However, in the ADAPTEC SCSI Select Utility, there is a boot option for each disk, too. And this options tell the machine to boot from the (empty) disk. Booting from an empty disk is sensless. And: It looks like as if the boot options in the ADAPTEC SCSI Select Utility cannot be changed that easily. If I choose "Boot Options" and press "Enter", just a the Utility suggests, I can see that the configuration is as follows: Single Image AIC -7902 (this is in my opinion the name of the disk) But: there is now way of changing this. I simply cannot add the CD ROM as an additonal boot device. There is the disk (AIC - 7902) and ---- that is it. Therefore: The millon dollar question is now: How to change boot options in an Adaptec SCSI Select utility in a way that makes the machin boot from CD ROM Drive? I am really not happy bothering you, folks, whith such complicated questions not really being part of BOINC, but I simply do not know how to make the machine go. I wrot an e-mail to the maufacturer of the machine, but they will for sure not answer quickly. And tomorrow, I have to leave, the machine stays here, and will stand and do nothing..... Maybe someone has an Siemens Fujitsu Celsius R 610 workstation and knows how to handle this strange ADAPTEC SCSI Select utility and its boot options???? Thank you very much in advance. The machine was bought for just 150 Euros, only for BOINC..... Yours Martin PS Martin Schnellinger and Kafejka is the same, I created a new user for the two machines I purchased |

I think you should probably try the Disable: Scan Bus option, but I really have no confirmation of that. AIC-7902 is the name of the SCSI controller. |
