Counting my pending credits I've reached Emerald on HCMD. Now the question is: Can I make Sapphire before running out of work? A few days ago I fired up a couple of extra machines on this project and now have 32 cores running.
----------------------------------------On August 29, in another thread, WCG Tech knreed estimated that there were about 25 days of work left as of that date. This would take us out to Sept 22 or 23. SekeRob's wonderful "Dashboard" (thank you SekeRob!) was adjusted to 25 and has been counting down since. It says 15 days to go as I type this. Based on that I should make it easily if all goes well on my machines. But I realize that all of these estimates are just that. ESTIMATES. Does anyone know if these numbers are still valid? |

Does anyone know if these numbers are still valid? With 32 cores, sounds like you need about 12 days. I think you're slam dunk safe with a little management & monitoring. I assume you've set HCMD2 as your exclusive project, and nothing else in BOINC. Unfortunately WGC doesn't give us a direct view into what is left in the fuel tank, how many siphons are drawing from the tank, or at what rate of consumption (it's all averages, as many of the major teams are enlisted in all WGC projects, so it's very arbitrary when a user receives HCMD2 vs some other WCG science or a different BOINC project all together). Also, those estimates are when the last WU goes out, but some WU's take 10 days to get returned (and only then is it known if there is another generation to run), or might timeout (thus re-added to the tank). Also, you can't trully count your pendings until they're validated (although yes, it's a 99.99 slam dunk typically), so some WU's go out for a 3rd pass. Then sometimes we lose a day, like about a week ago when nothing went in or out for 36 hours (which impacted people with short buffers). I also think this is about the 3rd time HCMD2 has ended ;-) So the other estimates were way off ... however, I do beleive the true trail off is about to begin. And actually, the fact is the iron gate could slam down any time without advance notice. So all that any of this says is, if you're aiming for Sapphire, don't cut it too too close to the wire. If your buffer is set to 2 days of work now, consider increasing it upwards (note: if you increase it all at once, you'll get a ton of WU's today that might have their timeouts on the same day that the project is set to run out ... thus if you're short an hour, you're toast .. I keep mine around a 6). The greedy method also says you can adjust certain settings to overgrab (ex: 15 days), or cycle out unstarted WU's (abort) near their timeout so that newer WU's will downloaded for added shelf life in case the project runs out the next day --- but those tactics are considered bad form within the community whose 1st goal is get all of the science done. |

I assume you've set HCMD2 as your exclusive project, and nothing else in BOINC. Hi 52 Aces, Yup, I'm 'all in' on HCMD2, nothing else for now. My cache is at 1.5 days now. Anything much higher on this project makes BOINC panic sometimes. I may up that to 2 or 2.5 when it gets closer. I was really hoping a tech or somebody in a position to know would chime in and confirm the estimates, of not. But I guess that's not really necessary. I'll just keep them all hot and babysit a little to catch hangups or whatever and hope for the best. If I miss it won't be the end of the world, and the science will indeed be done. |

No need for a person in authority. They are still distributing the children work units of the missed batches. Once those are returned and we start seeing the grandchildren units then you know the time is getting short(er).

Hello KWSN
What does a grandchild look like as opposed to a child work unit? Thx. in advance... @ moisesmcardona - congratulations on your sapphire! Very well done and we applaud your achievement! @gomeyer - great to have you working on this! Please keep all 32 cores crunching till the end! Like you, I am 'all in' and have no other BOINC projects currently running other than HCMD2 Best regards to all, Kismetix |

Every pair of numbers in the work unit name is a generation. There are threads that discuss this in far more detail, but the easy way to tell is the longer the name, the further descended it is from the original work.

The red one. Almost half of my CPU time so far in WCG dedicated to this sub-project, time to support also others :-)
----------------------------------------Good luck to all involved in it. Cheers and NI! Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Shrubbing@Home since January 5 2006 [Edit 2 times, last edit by branjo at Sep 13, 2012 7:14:41 PM] |
