4 cores issue, I want 1 core dedicated to another project

I have set the following in my device profile:

On multiprocessors, at most use: 3 processors
On multiprocessors, use: 75% of processors

but boinc is still running 4 instances of wcg
i've tryed boinc 6.6.20 and 6.6.29

how do I make it leave one core open for other projects ?

thanks

Re: 4 cores issue, I want 1 core dedicated to another project

I should specify my cpu has 4 cores, I want 1 core dedicated to CPDN and the rest to WCG
the device profile settings seem to have no effect

Re: 4 cores issue, I want 1 core dedicated to another project

You have to click "Update" in the projects tab of your BOINC client for the changes to take effect. Also, "On multiprocessors, use at most x% of processors" should be left set at 100%. Otherwise BOINC will only use 75% of the power of the remaining 3 processors. The wording is slightly confusing.

In projedt weight set CPDN to 25 and WCG to 75.....

I tryed all those combinations, it's still not acknowledging the settings
clicked update like 20 times in denial, then updated to a later boinc version and clicked update some more, then tryed messing with the % number, still no dice.

even tryed resetting my shortterm/longtterm debt to 0 for both projects

Re: 4 cores issue, I want 1 core dedicated to another project

I have an i7 920 machine, so I went into my WCG device profile and changed "on multi-processors, use at most X processors" from 8 to 7. Then I clicked "update" and my BOINC client recognised the changes but it's still processing 8 tasks. Perhaps it won't free up 1 core until one of the work units completes?

Then on my BOINC client, I went into Advanced>>Preferences>>Processor Usage and changed "On multi processor systems, use at most X% of processors" to 87.5%, and this was the result in the message log:

10/05/2009 12:09:44 AM||Number of usable CPUs has changed from 8 to 7. Running benchmarks.
10/05/2009 12:09:45 AM||Running CPU benchmarks
10/05/2009 12:09:45 AM||Suspending computation - running CPU benchmarks
10/05/2009 12:10:16 AM||Benchmark results:
10/05/2009 12:10:16 AM|| Number of CPUs: 7
10/05/2009 12:10:16 AM|| 3726 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
10/05/2009 12:10:16 AM|| 11780 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU
10/05/2009 12:10:17 AM||Resuming computation

So it does work if you set it in your local client preferences. For your quad core, set it to 75%.

Re: 4 cores issue, I want 1 core dedicated to another project

hmmm it appears to be working after messing with the resource share and waiting for a wcg wu to finish, dunno why

I had CPDN and WCG both set to 60

set to 25 and 75 like suggested above

hopefully it'll keep running the 1 cpdn wu (has over 1000hrs till completion) and doesn't suspend it and mess with the checkpoints

thanks

Re: 4 cores issue, I want 1 core dedicated to another project

It works by 'average'......over many weeks/days the AVERAGE will be 25/75..... biggrin

Re: 4 cores issue, I want 1 core dedicated to another project

I know, but that's not what I wanted.
I was expecting the max cpu's setting to work when set to 3 for an individual project
maybe if I set the resource share for CPDN to 999999999999999999999 and wcg to 1 it'll always run 1 instance of CPDN ....
