and again on the Thinkpad T61. So far the Lenovo desktop test machine runs fine.

Now that you mention that it is a Thinkpad it reminds me that I experienced same effects on my Thinkpad.
To me it only happened when I was running my Thinkpad (T60) on batteries either in my car or carrying it on my shoulder in my laptop case. This lead me to the opinion that there might be an influence from the ThinkVantage Active Protection system when it detects movement.

Did you move your Thinkpad at the time you got this messages, and have the ThinkVantage Active Protection installed and activated?

This is on a 64 bit Ubuntu machine.
Similar seen on Cure MD on a 32 bit Xubuntu randomly.
