washing your hands can prevent getting the flu, and of course staying away from people that have the flu. not much you can do really, vitamin c helps too, and being an active person.

So, how much did you guys pay to time the release with the recent "Swine Flu" outbreak? :) All kidding aside, nice to see another worthy project to the list. in my opinion they may have speed up the pre testing since i didnt see any apear in beta before they appeared here (corse i might have missed it or so) but i am guessing that they jumped through hoops to make sure it became avalible while the H1N1 was still popular in the news... would love to see some media coverage on this also was glad to see an E-mail about this project. yes its nice to have another active project to choose from |

Well I'm glad someone posted a screenshot of the running application, since nowhere in the announcement or the FAQ said who or what was behind it. FYI saw UTMB in the screenshot and am assuming it's University of Texas Medical Branch, same as DDDT's sponsor. Also the FAQ has a section on how to keep from catching influenza but nearly all of the information pertains to stopping the spread, not how to prevent catching it. For instance my washing my hands after I sneeze or staying home when I'm sick won't help ME from catching the flu... Faldor Here's the Research Participant page http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/flu1/viewFlu1Part.do Just also noticed that the Primary Investigator Welcome Post shows http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=25445 watowich Influenza Antiviral Drug Search and Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together Scientist

I really didn't expect that WCG could start a project where the scientists have no idea how long it is going to run for. It seemed such an unlikely idea. Now that Sekerob has started to post his fabulous graphs to include IADS, I see that IADS has no expected date of completion or percentage complete. So I guess you weren't joking. Maybe the guesstimate is going to fall to Sekerob and be added to the graphs then.

Hi astrolab,
Our very first project, HPF1, was run on a number of different genomes. At the start, we only knew that we would do the human genome. The others were selected from time to time after consultation. Our second project, Fight AIDS at Home, is running a large number of experiments. Occasionally an experiment has been terminated early. It all depends on the results. It took a while for word to slowly get around that our research projects tended to be open-ended. I think that the WCG staff did not want to get a reputation for being easily co-opted so they started by always having a fixed goal and then frequently extending it. Lawrence |
