Re: boinc brings linux to a crawl

The big resource hog is plasma, with boinc or the wu listed right behind it.

There seems to be a problem with Plasma & the calendar widget.
Could this be your issue?

Darn! That was amazing! Plasma had been running a minimum of 90% of cpu. I didn't give it much thought because I was sure it gave up its priority when another app needed it. I closed the calendar and the plasma cpu usage instantly dropped below 9%. The lag is gone and boinc is zipping along. biggrin

This is strange since I have the calendar widget on the celeron too, but plasma is consuming less than 8% of the cpu. Both are running the Oxygen theme. I wonder if there is more than 1 calendar widget and I just missed that.

Thanks so much! I felt guilty turning my pc off at night. Now, I can get back to crunching.

So, my first diagnosis was right, and you have learned a valuable lesson about reading the output from "top".

Excellent. Glad your computer is back to work.

Re: boinc brings linux to a crawl

Just as a follow up:

The celeron, running 6.2.15, is a little more than halfway through the wu.

My main pc, running the beta software, finished its wu and is a third of the way through the next wu. I think I'll keep the beta for now.

Thanks for the tips. I remember them for the future.

Re: boinc brings linux to a crawl

This is is probably unrelated, I share it just in case...

I had the same symptoms, it turned out that the problem was not caused by Boinc, it was caused by aMule running "behind" the Firestarter firewall with outbound traffic policy set to "restricted by default, whitelist traffic".

The problem ceased when I switched the firewall to "permissive by default, blacklist traffic" (which is a good reason to keep looking for a firewall for Linux with both the portNumber-oriented and the applicationName-oriented approaches to the allow/deny question, being the former the current Firestarter approach, the latter the current ZoneAlarm Free approach [windows]).

P.D.: Linux Ubuntu 8.04 64 bit (up to date).

Re: boinc brings linux to a crawl

I need some help, I've just recently switched from Windows to Linux and I was to run Boinc. Apparently I've done something wrong because my computer seems to not want to recognize the program. I keep getting this message:

Could not open the file /home/hossamassey/Deskto…5_i686-pc-linux-gnu(3).sh.

Thanks.

Re: boinc brings linux to a crawl

A Google search suggests that you tried to use the installer from the Boinc website.
Try using the version from the WCG home page (follow the download link).

Also, your script might not be marked as executable: chmod 770 <file name>

You can also just use your package manager with whatever Linus distro you are using and you shouldn't have any problems. It will save you a few steps. If your new to Linux and don't know how to do this just start another thread and ask.

Re: boinc brings linux to a crawl

Hello hossamassey,
You are going to have to explain your system and Linux distro, then ask for help. Nobody can help you with an unknown computer. Installing software using package managers is about the most basic help you can get in Linux since you need to be able to install software.
