Hello TimAndHedy,
----------------------------------------the question is only to maintain enough motivation by the members. Nobody earns more than "honor" with a badge. But trying to earn a badge can motivate people to do a little bit more than usual. Beta WUs are beta ! including failed and invalid WUs and sometimes crash. I don't think that it is a good idea to give the feeling to members that they could waste their time. We have already to deal with less fair projects outside of WCG which overgrant results systematically. We should not demotivate people participating to beta tests. Otherwise we will experience much more (and more dramatic) troubles in operation. Being honest, with only few systems, the chance to earn a beta badge is currently close to 0 ! (in particular if the crunched WUs failed ).Cheers, Yves |

Next project at WCG: Help Cure Beta Badge pandemic.
----------------------------------------knreed has posted on a review of what when should be credited under the program. Until that's been completed, in between all other priorities, I think we should put this beta badge discussion solidly on hold. Can we please. thanks.

I would like to propose that at least CPU time should be considered by beta projects in case of failed WUs, otherwise it will be really hard to earn a beta-badge ! Getting beta WUs at all is somewhat random. Getting credit for them is somewhat random. Some betas tests have mostly successful WUs and participants get lots of credit. Some betas look more like pre-alphas and error out all over the place ... and participants mostly get to curse and grumble. It can be annoying, but don't forget we're all in the same boat and we've all seen days and days of beta work disappear without credit. |

Extra credit awarded for problems after the fact aren't always published anywhere, so really nobody knows whether they were credited or not when beta tasks fail.
Remember, if you don't want tasks that sometimes fail, opt out of beta testing. Please. |

The goal of a beta is to find errors, so nothing is wasted. If anyone's keeping score AMD vs. Intel wise... 1 (AMD Athlon XP 2600+ running XP Pro) finished and returned a result successfully (12.99 hours credited). 1 (P4m 2.4GHz running XP Home) finished and returned errors, still says 'Pending Validation' in Results Status. The error might have been caused by my virus scanner (NAV 2009, engine 16.5.0.135) removing the wcg_beta8_maxdo_6.08_windows_intelx86 file from the 'slots' folder as soon as it was received (18.39 hours not credited)... I restored it as soon as I documented what happened (which was about 1.5 hours after NAV removed it), but apparently BOINC needed that file sooner. Unfortunately, I have a different NAV engine version (16.5.0.134) watching the AMD machine, so I don't know for certain they would both detect things exactly the same, heuristically. |

It can be annoying, but don't forget we're all in the same boat and we've all seen days and days of beta work disappear without credit. In almost a year of crunching, I have had 4 beta WU error out for which I got no credit. Not bad for beta work. One of them was this week, but I have 91 good beta WU. ...and no, participants do not get to curse and grumble. They DECIDE to act annoying. Errors are the price we pay to work towards the beta badge, and yes, life is not fair sometimes. If you get an error, what you need to do is post the error log and hope that someone else will post their error log so that the next beta WU you get validates. Thats how beta works. ![]() |

Thats how beta works. ![]() I've searched program files\BOINC\* and All Users\application data\BOINC\* on the machine that had the error(s), but I don't find any log file. Where can this error log be located? Thanks! ![]() |

ZoSo,
----------------------------------------You can display the Result Log of a WU by clicking on its status (Error, Valid, etc...) in your Results Status page (or in a Workunit status display like you have shown in another thread after your problem with Norton). While it is displayed just copy what you see (or parts of it if only a few lines are significant) and paste it to your post. Cheers. Jean. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by JmBoullier at Apr 24, 2009 4:30:55 PM] |
