I've just started running BOINC under WINXP (SP3) again, first 6.2.18 now 6.2.28 , and am recieving wildly innacurate times to completion on all the WCG workunits I have recieved so far, in the order of 400+ hours. All workunits have completed in the expected 4 to 7 hours. As far as I remember when I last ran BOINC under WinXP it didn't have this problem
----------------------------------------I upgraded to BOINC 6.2.28 (WCG recommended client), but this makes no difference. Installed and running as a service, as I always do under Windows. I haven't run BOINC under WinXP for a while, only Linux (without issues), so I don't know if this is a known issue, but I cant find any threads about it (BTW the forum search is terrible). Wait for the times to adjust. Give it a few days.

My estimated times to completion are FINALLY back to normal. One month is a bit longer than "a few days", IMHO.

It's good to know I'm not alone. What was the cause?
----------------------------------------Like I said in the OP, I normally ran BOINC under Linux, so if there was any news about this I missed it. I did do a forum seach but it came up empty. I also only run WCG these days, so I didn't check the other BOINC project forums. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at May 20, 2009 11:25:15 PM] |

Hello 5 and a half of 13,
We have started 2 new projects (FLU and HCMD2) and have had more than the normal trouble with HCMD2 work units. I expect that it will cause occasional trouble unless we develop a method for predicting the size of a work unit. Right now, a few HCMD2 work units are unexpectedly long. Lawrence |

Once upon a time I attempted to explain this yo yo ing, so here's the FAQ to which I currently have no words to add: http://worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=21550

Sekerob, is there anywhere in BOINC that you can see the estimated length of the total work in it's queue? (other than, manually counting it all up)

At Berkeley they suffer from missed opportunities. Client 6.6 now has a properties screen both for project and task. At project level I would have expected such information... but it is not, so we continue to use BOINCview which says my quad has 4 days, 11 hours 43 minutes, 41 seconds worth of work queued.... that's 1 day and 3 hours per core, even when the buffer is set to hold 0.81 presently.
----------------------------------------On the upside, the properties screen does show the current rDCF of 1.29, up from yesterday 1.18, so the current jobs are taking longer than expected. PS, maybe if you delve into the client_state.xml you could find the value too. Let us know if you do.

Thanks Sekerob for your reply.
----------------------------------------As I don't have an awful lot of spare time at the moment and a very long list (curtesy of HCMD2) waiting processing, I'll have to come back to this later. BTW, what is this BOINCview you mention?, is it an add-on to the core BOINC system, and if so, is there a recommended version/link for it? ![]() |
