Hi
I got tired of only sending in 3-4 work units a day so I bit the bullet and ordered a new i7 computer today $2100 at Dell. Just want to check is it fairly easy to load Boinc on to a new vista 64 SP1 computer these days. I know when vista first came out people had a lot of problems and I just want to get a heads up on how to go about loading Bonic on my new computer before I recieve it in about a week. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. |

It is easy. You just have to put BOINC.exe to your windows task scheduler. If you need any help with those parameters, please let us know!

Just make sure if you have an I7 you populate all three memory channels. At first, I only had one channel populated with 2GB and performance was horrible. You all three channels populated for an I7 with a minimum of 3GB. - Mitch ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thank you everyone for your comments
Didactylos, I will use the recommended installation method, it appears to be fairly straight forward. Can I assume that once I complete the install and start Bonic that it will be able to tell exactly what I have in the way of system resources and configure itselft to produce maximum output as I have selected in my default Device Profile? Or will I need to Tweak the Preferences in Boinc as well? As the main reason I decided to get an i7 was to retire my old system and increase my work unit output on a a newer faster one. I want to start moving up in the userfriendly.org team rankings, been stuck at the same place in the rankings for a while now on my old system. |

The preference systems are mutually exclusive. I recommend using the web-based preferences. So, if you have already selected "Maximum Output", that's job done....
But feel free to look over the preferences and make sure there are no problems. Click on "Custom" to see the complete settings. |

I basically have the same setup Mitch describes, but I now have a question...
When this system first went online (right at 2 weeks ago) it was doing an average of 4 hours per Work Unit on all 8 threads. Clearly this was returning a lot of results. However that has changed. The Work Unit times on average have now gone up to 9-10 hours and clearly reduced the number of returned results. Nothing else is loaded or running on this computer at all. The system itself has auto-tuned to run above 3.2GHz at 3.46GHz. I know WU sizes differ and have seen some confirmation of that in various forum threads. Actual question... Does WCG automatically adjust the size of the WUs sent to computers based on what they can handle and amount of actual uptime? If not, then I cannot imagine why the slowdown in turnaround times. |

doug - No WCG does not size WUs for the machine they are going to be run on, the closest thing is that RICE will run for 7 hours on any and all machines but you are seeing times greater than that so I do agree that there is *something* going on but I am sure it is not WCG.
Can you please check your prefernces, keeping in mind that if you set them even one time on your local PC through BOINC manager that those settings will be overiding anything you set on the Website preferences. If you do want to use the web preferences instead of the local, please open the preference through BOINC manager and click the Clear button. |

This has been resolved...
It was not an issue with BOINC client or profiles, but I did check there first. I then moved on to further investigating system tuning and performance. In this process I noticed that the CPU was operating near critical temperature. Further investigation showed front/rear fans operating at high RPMs and CPU fan at zero RPM. Initial disbelief turned to caution and I opened easy open case and found that CPU fan was indeed not spinning. Fan replaced now. Not surprisingly, the front/back fans slowed down as the CPU fan takes up cooling load. The CPU now operates in acceptable temperature range and the WCG project work rates have risen back to expected levels. Now to hope that this CPU fan failure did not leave the CPU overheating too long... |
