Re: Boinc shuts down with red messages

Assuming you have full rights as the error messages suggest you don''t have, probably your security software is interfering. What are their name(s) and versions?

Most people have to disable the BOINC data directory scanning to prevent file lock conflicts. The data directory location you find in the BOINC startup message log.

Re: Boinc shuts down with red messages

This was a little cryptic. The data directory is :
17/04/2009 10:52:35 AM||Data directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC
The state file gets created :client_state_next.xml . At least I think that is the state file.
This was working just fine until yesterday.
I see several message logs in this BOINC diretory etc. but again it's not clear what the problem is.
Is it correct to say that the boinc_master userid suddenly lost the right to rename it's files?
I disabled the firewall etc. in my CA security package but it makes no difference.
Any good ideas?
Or should I just reinstall BOINC?
This seems to be the only way to correct errors in the PC world (I'm a retired mainframe expert as you can tell by now ).

Re: Boinc shuts down with red messages

1. Abort all work still in the task buffer or better/best is the simple Project > select WCG > Detach, which will signal servers to invalidate all work on your client.
2. Stop BOINC / The Service if not allowed to do on BOINC Manager exit.
3. Delete client_state.xml and all their prev and next versions lurking.
4. Uninstall
5. Reinstall, but using the WCG recommended version 6.2.28 which you can fetch via the download link right top on your My Grid page.

(CA I suppose is Computer Associates. You could take the slow route and first exclude the data_dir as said from scanning. If you've been doing things with the boinc_master account, yes you get issues. By itself it should not loose those rights.)

Re: Boinc shuts down with red messages

I cannot delete or rename the state file. There seems to be a problem with the BOINC directory. The new 6.1.28 level will not start either.
I renamed the old directory BOINC to BOINCBAD. Can I just copy the old files to the new directory or have I lost everything and should start from scratch??

Re: Boinc shuts down with red messages

Okay, smells like a former mainframe expert has a mess on hand with a machine we assume you have full control.

Check if BOINC.exe (the core client service) is running still after exiting the client.

Then, just do point 1 of my list and run the uninstall and try deleting afterwards. If that fails, reinstall and put the application in e.g.

C:\Program Files\BOINCnew

and the data dir

C:\ProgramData\BOINCdata

choose Protected+All User control, so you wont depend on the admin account for control.

Re: Boinc shuts down with red messages

The old mainframe expert is still stuck with Boinc not willing to run at all for the last few days. This is mainly due to harddisk problems etc.
However now Boinc starts and comes up with messages as follows:
25/04/2009 12:53:35 PM|World Community Grid|Fetching scheduler list
25/04/2009 12:58:37 PM||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
25/04/2009 1:03:39 PM||BOINC can't access Internet - check network connection or proxy configuration.
*************
When I go to advanced/options/connections I cannot set a default connection. The GUI drop down screen does not seem to work.
When I compare this to my other PC it is set to Broadband Connection.
How come I cannot set this up properly or where do we keep this info? If the GUI does not work perhaps I can just change the file .
