odd difference between vista and ubuntu!

ok so here is the problem, I have a box that was dedicated to running wcg only on ubuntu64 but we decided to use this box in another room for the wife .

She does not know linux so we put vista64 on it and that's when the the prob started, my crunch time for units has almost doubled it went from an average of 2-3 hours on hfcc to almost 6-7 hours .
now keep in mind that it is on the same profile and is overclocked to 3125 mhz and is a 9850 phenom amd so it was doing about 31+ units a day now it is half that.
There is nothing running other than boinc right now and I have 6gb of memory so it is not vista hogging memory up.
My question is what do think is the problem ,it should be alot faster than it is
as i also have another vista quad intel at about 3000mhz and it runs 25+ units a day .
so help me out please!!

Hi czahn,
There should not be much difference between Vista 64 and Linux 64 as far as speed goes, but you are not the first to report major differences. Make sure that your device profile is set to maximum speed. If it is running at 100%, then I do not know what else you can try. Keep an eye on HPF2. On some Vista 64 systems HPF2 has a high error rate and should be excluded.

Have you checked the power management features?

Re: odd difference between vista and ubuntu!

yes it is running at 100% everything maxed ,I also looked to see if there was any type of cpu setback on it where it would throttle it down but there is nothing like that running , also power management is set at performance .

I dont know whats up but It is just frustrating because I want to run and produce as many results as possible.
I am going to tweak it a little bit more and then switch to rice or another wcg project and see if it just hfcc that causes me problems .

cool Re: odd difference between vista and ubuntu!

I believe that it is not the problem. The manager of power reserves an important safety margin on AMD.
It is thus necessary to install powersaved and kpowersave, therefore for that ...
sudo apt-get install powersaved
sudo apt-get install kpowersave

Hi Alain!
czahn finds that Vista 64 is performing less than Ubuntu 64, not the opposite.
His problem is with the Vista case. smile

Cheers. Jean.

Re: odd difference between vista and ubuntu!

My machine has a dual-boot, using WUBI. This gives me a choice of XP32 or Ubuntu64. The performance difference, depending on the work being run, can be as much as double!

I went this route due to the amount of sofware we have in Windoze and the rest of the family preferring the interface. In this respect, Linux has made giant strides and the choice is almost one of personal preference (and cost!).

MdR je n'avais pas compris, j'ai tellement l'habitude de rencontre le problème inverse.

I had not understood, we always encounter the opposite problem. sad

It is also a different philosophy.
I have at home only Linux (for free), but at job only Windows for a question of compatibility with the other companies.

Re: odd difference between vista and ubuntu!

does it seem to be an amd /vista 64 problem that is the cause ?

also as a side note I got some hfcc units on it that are almost 8hours and I had 1 run almost 13 hours last night.

my vista intel box runs pretty fast 3-4 hour units.in the manager it shows them running about 4:20 and that is right about what they run.

but this amd box keeps getting longer and in some cases much longer units!

when I run the benchmarks the amd comes up 3167 whet 6869 dhry and the intel is 2915 whet 6484 whet.

???????
