Hi all,
I recently replaced my aged CRT monitor with a new Dell S2209W. Despite my power saving config staying the same, and set to turn off monitor after 20 minutes of non-use, the Dell is staying on with a blank screen. I've tried both DVI and VGA and see the same issue. However, if I exit my BOINC agent, it will shift into powersave correctly. This worked correctly with my aged CRT. Any ideas? I have rebooted. Other than Windows Defender definition updates, I haven't installed any Windows updates since. |

Use the power saving BOINC profile if this is really what you want to do.
----------------------------------------Start here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do If you just mean that the new monitor is simply going blank instead of the monitor turning off completely, then you don't need to do anything. Not sure if I understand exactly (or if I made myself clear the first time). I do mean that I want my monitor to go into power save. It currently does not. The old one did. And I know the agent is the cause because when I close it out, the monitor successfully goes into power save mode. Does this help? |

Are u using the BOINC screensaver and if so, have you set the box to blank the screen after X minutes (to protect e.g. old CRT displays). Don't know how that interacts with power-saving though. I use the Blank Screensaver. I've found that at times I'd had to resave the settings. No idea why but than I'd have a blank screen, but not powering off, even just a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the tip. Don't know (I'm not at home now), but will check.

I will try to be as clear as I can:
BOINC can prevent your computer from going into power saving mode. BOINC cannot stop your monitor from going into power saving mode. So, until you work out what "blank screen, but not powering off" means, we can't help. Sekerob's suggestion is just about the only thing that could cause this situation, but even this won't prevent your monitor from going into powersaving. |

Didactylos, I do appreciate what you're writing, and it doesn't make sense to me either. However, I can only tell you what I'm seeing: I have my system set to turn off the monitor after 20 minutes of non-use. If I use my new Dell monitor, and leave the BOINC client running, after 20 minutes of non-use it never goes into powersave mode. It stays on with a blank screen. When I exit the client and wait 20 minutes, the monitor does successfully go into powersave mode. I'm extremely confident about this because the Dell monitor's on-button lights up as white when on, and amber when in powersave.

Are you sure Vista isn't simply using the monitor light to inform you about the computer power saving state, rather than just the monitor?
I'm fairly sure I have seen behaviour like this. Possibly the monitor has multiple sleep modes. Anyway, if the backlight is off, then it is using just about as little power as it can. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. |

Good question. The backlight isn't off. I know this because it quickly switches off and then back on (with my desktop) when I wiggle the mouse to wake the display back up.

Maybe you have the Boinc screen saver on.
----------------------------------------Set the scrensaver to EMPTY and set the time In energy saving. set your computer to always running In monitor powersave set to the SAME time you write before.
