Re: Crunchers leaving WCG

I've got the power I just need more determination, or is it dedication

EDIT: rather than double posting I'll just edit this post, hopefully it will bump!!!

SCer's I've been on a mission at another project that (for me) was a huge success with somewhere around 400,000 points gained in just over 30 days; but alas I've set that project to burn out on my machines after the current cache is run through; that will begin opening machines sometime tomorrow (3/16/12)! These and every other machine I can get my hands on will be @ WCG for SC until...well until I leave again

Re: Crunchers leaving WCG

Bump!!!

BTW SCer's that have followed... Cutshaw has been bitten!! He's running 4 cores on 3 machines. I know all his machines; as I built them! With minor tweaking and some RAM here and there, along with persistence, he should be in the arena 600 to 800 Cobbles/day...Not bad for someone that has only been into this for 2 weeks!!

He has asked about a KVM setup and asked me to keep a close look out for more..better..faster Hardware.....I've created a Monster! Perhaps I should change from "Sport" to "Dr. Frankenstein"!

Re: Crunchers leaving WCG

I kind of like talking to myself, you would be surprise how often I agree with what I am saying. biggrin

Not that I never disagree with myself, and will always blame myself for instructing me on doing something incorrectly . . . .

Good to see Cutshaw delving into the world of being a serious cruncher with 3 systems. hugs

I am running 3 systems myself all Intel i7, an 860, an 870, and a 920. Hyper threading helps a lot as far as crunching goes.

I also find that processors that benchmark well on floating point benchmarks, tend to bring in the results, good integer performance does not seem to be reflected into actual performance when it comes to crunching.

Tom's hardware regularly has articles for energy efficiency of CPUs, handy if they are going to be running a lot; sometimes it is good to sacrifice some performance for power savings. I tend to look for something with a (good performance) / (power usage) ratio. But right now cannot really look at updating my systems, as they are only just over a year old.

Mind you it takes a lot of power savings to pay off new hardware, if you can get good systems for a bargin, jump on it! money eyes

Enough rambling on, or should I continue?

Sure is harder to make conversation, when we cannot discuss coffee . . . coffee coffee coffee coffee coffee

cool Re: Crunchers leaving WCG

I'm not a tyrant or any such thing! I just hated seeing this tread meander to nowhere!!!
Cutshaw is truly bitten by the DC Bug ...I spent several hours with him last night explaining how it all works and getting together plans to get us both up to par; him for being a late entry...I think he will be source to watch; me for being a slacker!

Royden ...I'm down to basically three machines myself

1. A Xeon dual CPU dual Core w/HT = 8 Cores@3.2 each behind Linux Mint
2 an AMD Quad @ 2.8 (I believe) behind Linux Mint
3. a Dually @1.8 behind Vista

Several lesser machines that put together could probably account for 12 Ghz processing ...

and a DOA AMD Quad in need of parts, soon to be resuscitated

I agree that Finesse in components makes a difference but there is something to be said about raw strength in numbers of contributors

Not to mention large number of small systems (like netbooks or nettops), are kick a$$ for badge hunting, as per watt of power they deliver more run time that a larger more power hungry system. biggrin

When it comes to results or points, you can see why those power hungry systems are around, as per watt you are better off with a big (newer) processor, than several small systems.

But they all help in their own way, I have to think the WCG feeds out projects to those systems that can run them most efficiently.

And one day we are going to be able to say "We have cured cancer", then puff on a cigar, without worrying about getting cancer, or be able to drink water anywhere in the world without having to have shots before we leave the country. That is the day I am looking for, but until them will settle on badges.

BTW, all of my crunchers are also used for gaming, etc, and I don't see any of us willing to play skyrim on a nettop.

Re: Crunchers leaving WCG

well said my friend

the 3 DT's I mentioned just finished a grueling challenge @ Docking and did a combined average of over 10K/day for almost 500K in just over 30 days

...yet I have MANY P4 and P-M laptops sitting around here, like puppies at the animal shelter looking for a new home, that combined could dwarf those 3! All resources are to be engaged in this teamwide rush

Royden...I'm positive you and I aren't to be the only producers (wink)... watch out for GP!!!!
