Zero Redundancy, but Pending Validation for 36 hours

The following WU has been in Pending Validation status for 1,5 days now:

Project Name: Help Fight Childhood Cancer
Created: 3/23/09
Name: HFCC_t1_00059701_TrkB_0000
Minimum Quorum: 1
Replication: 1

Result Name Status Sent Time Time Due /
Return Time CPU Time (hours) Claimed/ Granted BOINC Credit
HFCC_ t1_ 00059701_ TrkB_ 0000_ 0-- Pending Validation 3/24/09 00:11:22 3/27/09 01:23:43 21.88 89.9 / 0.0

What will happen next? Will another copy be sent out? Is there a maximum time a Zero Redundancy WU can stay in PV status?

Re: Zero Redundancy, but Pending Validation for 36 hours

Hello rkar22,
There is no time limit. Either the validation process will run or another copy will be issued for a multiple-result validation.

Re: Zero Redundancy, but Pending Validation for 36 hours

rkar22.

I also have a WU hanging about awaiting validation...

Project Name: Help Fight Childhood Cancer
Created: 21/03/09
Name: HFCC_t1_00037056_TrkB_0001
Minimum Quorum: 2
Replication: 2

It'll be sorted out in time.

Re: Zero Redundancy, but Pending Validation for 36 hours [Resolved]

Finally this WU turned Valid, after having spent about one week in PV status. I still wonder why it took so long to validate this one.
Most of the work units (in all projects) seem to validate almost immediately after having reached the quorum; I watched only a few to validate later, but the delay was usually no more than 1 - 2 hours.

Re: Zero Redundancy, but Pending Validation for 36 hours [Resolved]

You don't say, just infer, but did you verify no additional copies were send out? Pending Validation generally means that and yes, occasionally the validators are paused so other processes can catch up to restore overall system parity.

Occasionally a clean up is run, such as one at days end, so everything there was to validate before 00:00 UTC does get validated if sufficient copies are there. This is one of the reasons why the actual time the Statistics run lockout starts is variable, but really only includes for the day those results completed on a WCG day (following the UTC timekeeping).

Re: Zero Redundancy, but Pending Validation for 36 hours

The other unit might just be running on another computer that is not running all the time, or a bit slow.
So it might take quite a long time.
If no result comes from the other computer within about 2 weeks, it is sent out again to another computer.

Re: Zero Redundancy, but Pending Validation for 36 hours

All projects are now 10 days for all new work generated. (See knreed announcement). Means after 10:00:00:01 days a new copy is set ready for sending to replace a "no reply".

Re: Zero Redundancy, but Pending Validation for 36 hours

Sek, Thorsten,
only one copy was sent out for this work unit, so there was no other copy to wait for:

Project Name: Help Fight Childhood Cancer
Created: 3/23/09
Name: HFCC_t1_00059701_TrkB_0000
Minimum Quorum: 1
Replication: 1

Result Name Status Sent Time Time Due /
Return Time CPU Time (hours) Claimed/ Granted BOINC Credit
HFCC_ t1_ 00059701_ TrkB_ 0000_ 0-- Valid 3/24/09 00:11:22 3/27/09 01:23:43 21.88 89.9 / 79.2

Still it took about one week for the status to change from 'Pending Validation' to 'Valid', and I'm curious about the possible reason(s) for this behavior.

If my understanding of the validating mechanism is correct, an additional copy would have been sent out only if the validation process for my copy completed and returned a result different from 'Valid'.

Thank you for your input,
Robert

Re: Zero Redundancy, but Pending Validation for 36 hours

Hi rkar22,
Sounds puzzling to me. Just to verify, when you click on the result name, it only shows one work unit and when you click on the status Valid, it shows a normal successful completion. If there is nothing unusual for either of those 2 checks, then it sounds as though something got hung up on the server.

Hi Lawrence,
it's exactly as you write: I see only one work unit when I click on the result name (see my previous post), and I can't see anything unusual in the result log (essential parts of it quoted below):
