Ubuntu: Redo Installation

When I went to install BOINC/WCG on my new Dell Mini with Ubuntu, I downloaded the latest BOINC for Ubuntu 8.10 from their web site, then attached WGC.

That is to say, I downloaded the .sh file to my desktop and opened it to place all it's components in a folder on the desktop. I can load the client and manager files from there and everything works fine. But I'd really like to get a cleaner installation. That is, so the program will show up in my Applications list [instead of on the desktop], at least, even if it doesn't load automatically when I turn on the system.

How do I do this? Do I need to run another file that's in the program folder? Or do I need to delete this folder and reinstall from a depository or something?

On a previous Ubuntu computer, I had a problem with the synaptic depository having an old version of the program that I had problems with. I thought I could get around that by installing directly from BOINC this time. But it's not really worked out satisfactorily for me. Can someone help me with this?

Yes.

Re: Ubuntu: Redo Installation

Last time I tried, Ubuntu 8.10 had a major issue with BOINC and would not work on World Community Grid out of the box. It had something to do with the install package and the certs being wrong or missing. Since 8.10 is not long term support, chances of this being fixed are small.

There is a way to use the 8.04 BOINC packages with Ubuntu, but it requires some changes in sources.list and then always having the application show up as needing an upgrade in the upgrade manager.

Note: installing from the repository will do the auto-start for you and put boinc-manager in the application menus.

Re: Ubuntu: Redo Installation

I think the certificate problem has been fixed. When I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 late (beginning of January) I do not remember having anything to correct in this area.

The only remaining problem for me is the really huge rate of page faults for HCC: 125,000 pf/s!

Cheers. Jean.

I'm told this was fixed, but I haven't been able to confirm it.

Re: Ubuntu: Redo Installation

Correction: my Dell mini has Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy)

I deleted the folder from the .sh file downloaded directly from BOINC, and I installed the client and manager files in my Synaptic Package Manager. They were there identified as 5.10.45-1ubuntu1

Now the manager will not download any work from the WCG server. It gives this message each time it tries to connect:
"message from server: platform 'i686-pc-linux-gnulp' not found

What does this mean? Is it something I can fix? Thanks for the continuing help.

Re: Ubuntu: Redo Installation

It means there is a bug in the package somewhere, which is odd, because the 5.10.45 Ubuntu package has been stable for years. Someone else reported this problem earlier this month.

You could try putting <alt_platform>i686-pc-linux-gnu</alt_platform> in your cc_config.xml file.

Yipes!
Who is the keeper of that package? Is there someone who can check on this and correct it? I really need the repository package to work for me.

I'm not keen on messing with system files. Matter of fact, the Dell Mini I have evidently has restricted access rights to a lot of system-level things. I doubt if I could edit the configuration file, even if I wanted to.

Re: Ubuntu: Redo Installation

cc_config.xml is a BOINC file, so you can edit it safely.

In fact, the version of BOINC you have doesn't come with a cc_config.xml file, so you will have to create it from scratch.

I'm not 100% sure where you should put the file, but these instructions will guide you: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Data_directory

Re: Ubuntu: Redo Installation

I give up. I did have that file in the version I got from the repository. But my Dell Mini system won't let me edit it. So I'm stuck not able to run WCG, except from the .sh file I downloaded from the Berkeley site.

I checked out the WCG download, but it's also a .sh file. I'm guessing that downloading and opening that one would also lead me nowhere better than where I am now. Too bad nobody has a .deb file that would install for me the way it should.
