For no apparent reason, the WCG screen saver began freezing a few days ago (although WCG continues to run) and I have to do a hard shutdown to get back to my desktop. I changed it to beziers, but that freezes, too. Anyone know what the deal is? -Grammy Emmy (PS: Why does it say "stranger" under my name to the left?)

Monica --
Not many of us have any experience with the screensaver because it uses processor cycles to produce the graphic and, as a result, takes them away from the real WCG task making the calculations for folding. I would recommend getting rid of the screensaver by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting properties. Then click on the "Screen Save" tab at the top. In the center, there is a drop down menu. Click on that and select "(none)". Then, click on the "Power" button at the bottom of the window. On the settings you will see "Turn off Monitor". Use the drop-down menu to select some value that works for you and then exit your way out using the "OK" buttons. This will insure that you do not burn an image into your monitor screen at the same time it will not take away from the WCG task. The answer to your second question was answered here in this forum at https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2491. Screensaver freezing up is a symptom of a system that has gone unstable. This could be a hardware problem, but the first thing to check is the OS. Use Google to look up phrases such as 'registry fix' or 'registry clean'. This should get you a list of sites that offer a free trial of their PC utility for fixing OS system problems. One of these might help. It is worth a try.

Monica,
Perhaps you provide us with more information about your system... Are you using XP? Do you have SP2 installed? Anything else you want to include... Thanks. nelsoc |

All,
Thank you so much for your kindness and willingness to provide such useful info. Very cool, indeed. To answer your questions in one fell swoop, my system is an XP. and I perform cleanup and backup routines regularly, including periodic defrags (been in the tech pubs biz for many a year -- can't miss those deadlines!). Since I don't want to impede the WCG proteome task, I've gone with the suggestion to use no screen saver and just shut down the monitor after a period of time. Next I'll follow up on finding free "registry fix / registry clean" info. Again, thanks! :) Monica |

----------------------------------------I set my screen saver to "blank screen" which saves the screen (if we really need to worry about that nowdays) and does not eat up processor cycles. Regards. |
