I just upgraded on my Windows XP laptop to 6.2.28 and now all my WUs fail.
Some process for an hour or 2 and some only for 5 minutes. I gets errors in different places. Here is an example of one error. Anybody have any ideas on what I can look at or what needs to change? How do I get back working? Right now my CPU is being wasted on these Errors. Should I go back to 5.8.15 if I can find it? Thanks for any help.======================= Result Log <core_client_version>6.2.28</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> Incorrect function. I suspect it's HPF2 Yes / No ? Go back to the WCG 5.10.45 package as the combo 6.2.28 plus HPF2 is known to have an illusive issue.

Yes, mostly HPF2 although some DDD failed as well. I have upgraded to 6.4.7 from the berkeley site. I'll see if that works. If not, I'll look for the 5.10.?? you recommended. Thanks.

6.4.x is not a recommended version and was only released to quickly add support for GPU crunching. Since WCG currently does not provide GPU tasks anyway there is no reason to go beyond 6.2.28 if you only do WCG.
As Sekerob mentions 5.10.45 actually works better in some cases. |

I've tried 6.4.7 and 5.8,16 from Berkeley. Both still give me more errors than I'd like. Oh to have just left things alone. Where do I get 5.10.45 so I can trust it? Thanks.

Or the version you had before: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/wcg_boinc_5.8.15_windows_intelx86.exe
ripleys, you are the first person to claim a link between specific BOINC versions and this known HPF2 incorrect function error. I am interested to know whether reverting does solve the problem, so please do report back with your findings, particularly related to HPF2. 5.8 was built with different C libraries, so there are many possibilities (and possible complications) here. |

One thing I have found is that when you upgrade the application you should manually delete ALL files from the previous version and make sure you install the entire application on one drive. I have personally run into a problem when upgrading because some of the config or work unit files become corrupted.

No, upgrading in 99.9% of the times can be done even when BOINC is still running. The installer will stop the service put the new version on, even migrate the data from elsewhere if needed and resume where it left of. No such need as manually deleting anything, less there was something quite wrong to begin with.

OK, here is what happened... I now have 5.10.45 (from the link given here in this thread). It works fine when I am connected at home. I did get some failures today though when VPN'ed to work (I'm guessing that caused it to fail). Maybe that's also what the problem was before (VPNing to work). I'm not going to try the other versions again though.
While I was at a work site, I also got all failures with 5.10.45. So it looks like being away from home (something to do with the work network??) or VPNing may cause a problem. |
