Two research groups, one in Germany, the other in USA and India, have released their first drafts of the human proteome. Unlike earlier draft proteomes derived from the human genome (which we used in HPF) these have been created by isolating proteins from human tissue, splitting them up into short segments, then running these segments through a mass spectrometer. The Johns Hopkins University head of the USA/India project says that they only found 84% of the proteins predicted from the genome but also found hundreds of unpredicted proteins being produced by parts of the genome that were thought to be non-coding.
