Should I upgrade to BOINC 6.4.7?

On the BOINC web site they are now saying that 6.4.7 is the stable version. According to the change log, part of the reason for the new release is due to some security issues.

Should I upgrade to this version (I'm currently running 6.2.19 with no problems), or does the WCG advice to avoid the 6.4.x versions still hold? Basically, which is worse, the security issues or the problems with 6.4.x?

Thanks

Re: Should I upgrade to BOINC 6.4.7?

WCG has started very preliminary testing internally for 6.6, where 6.4 was explicitly for GPU crunching only. It will be a long while before we'll see a formal release. 'Predicting' 6.6.28 or higher getting the green light.

Sekerob: Are you saying that the security issues aren't significant?

If BOINC have released a new version to deal with security issues, why does WCG think that these can be ignored until version 6.6?

Re: Should I upgrade to BOINC 6.4.7?

drghughes, Berkeley should have produced an update to the World Community Grid recommended version. I don't know why they have failed to do so, since it was at our prompting that they fixed the security issue at all.

Having reviewed the security issue earlier, I believe that the problems with Berkeley's untested version outweigh the security risk, which is small. However, as a precaution, you can follow the security advice given here: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Security

Didactylos, to consider as a highlight/amplification to the security FAQ or the cc_config.xml, that the first sample is WCG specific i.e. the below 3 lines polling WCG and not the W3W.

<client_version_check_url>http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/download.ph...ent_version_check_url>
<client_download_url>http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/download.php</client_download_url>
<network_test_url>http://www.ibm.com/</network_test_url>

Folk that have the none-custom version will never have these.
