I consider buying a computer especially for BOINC.
My question is, which computer to buy. I go to a computer shop and ask for a fast computer, then they will sell me a computer for gameing, because those are the fastest ones. However, they are optimized for sopisticated grafics. And BONIC is not dealing with grafics, so why buy a computer optimized for grafics? This would not make sese. Can anyone tell me, whether BOIC uses the ressources of a grafic card/grafical chip for example NIVIDA at all? If I buy a sever, it is optimized for hosting, and not for number crunching. So I still have not resolved the question, which computer to buy for number crunching for BOINC. Should it be a multi processor machine? Which firms (in Germany or Europe) offer such number crunchers? Thanks in advance for any help Martin S |

Hello Kafejka,
In general, avoid spending on graphics. Buy a quad computer with 4 GB of memory and good cooling. Use the Internet to get a good price for an Intel Core 2, AMD Phenom 2 or Intel Core i7 system. If possible, get a system that is supported locally in case you run into problems, since it sounds as though you are not a computer 'do-it-yourself' expert. Lawrence |

Hello Lawrence,
Thank you for the answer. Using the hints given in your answer, I came to the idea of buying a real workstation. Can you comment this, please? And I understand, that it would be the best to run as little other things on the machine, only BOINC itself. I understand, that it should be started from a command line, not runnig a graphical surface at all. Right? Another question is, which operating system to choose. At the moment, I am on Linux, Umbuntu. But I dit not make it to run BOINC from the startup sequence, not runnig Umbuntu itself. Maybe another operating system would be better? Can you pleasee tell me which operating system is popular on real scientific worksations - and good for BOINC? Maybe you can help me to get in kontakt with people who are leading in BOINC runtime? If you look at the user rankings you just stand with open mouth and ask yourself: On what kind of machine dit they do THAT?????? Thanks again in advance for your help. Martin S (Kafejka) |

Hello Kafejka,
----------------------------------------I think EUR 2'000.- is too much. You can already find good and quiet computers (e.g. Asus board, Intel Core 2 Quad 9450 with 4 GB RAM) for around CHF 1'400.- (around EUR 950.-). I operate two such hosts with good performance and without any concerns (around 1'800 boinc credit per day). I agree with the previous statement: for crunching work, graphic is not important (as long as CUDA is not more mature than currently). You should be reasonable and limit your investment Cheers, Yves ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by KerSamson at Feb 22, 2009 6:01:56 PM] |

I recommend you choose either Intel Core i7 or AMD Phenom II processor as they are a bit faster than others available. They cost you a bit more, but you can't go wrong with those.
----------------------------------------Another thing is that you maybe want to spend a bit more for a good case and cooling. Look for Silverstone/Antec case and Noctua/Thermalright coolers, just for example. That is how you get a quiet 24/7 system that is fun to show all your friends ![]()

Hello,
you need many cores and a good cooling. Today CUDA has still bugs, sometimes a cpu-core is doing nothing. A list for graphiccards that work in the gpu-grid ist here: http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=316 But I would wait and buy a faster one later. Greetings |
