Resetting/freezing BOINC client

Well, after running WCG with no problems on my new computer, I hooked the old p4 machine up... Started runing fine. Then it hit 6.6%. I opened internet came back a few minutes later... 6.4%.. Wha? Suspicious, I watched it. Sure enough, im not even joking about this either, it resets at EXACTLY 6.66%. resets back to 6.35% Did it repeatedly. Then aborted it, and now that one says aborted, and the other 2 have a "computation error" and are at 100%, and wont go away. Reinstalled boinc, everything they wont go away and I cannot get new work units. Help anyone? Oh, running latest BOINC client on a fresh install of Windows Vista 32 bit home Premium.

By the way, the resetting unit is.. um

Hello AW33,
Better paste your Messages tab here so that we can look at it. Did you look at http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Installation_walkthrough_(Vista) or http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=12856 when you installed on Vista?

No I didnt, because I installed it on my new computer which also has vista, without any problems. Like I said, it was that wierd resetting thing at 6.66%, and then computation errors. And I cant get new work units in there.

Re: Resetting/freezing BOINC client

There's not much to go on but:

1) Your 6.66 > 6.4 > 6.66 > 6.35% job could have been an FAAH job. Was it? If so, that's a normal pattern until it determines the best energy.
2) A P4 3 ghz is probably a hyperventilating (HT) type where you permitted BOINC to use 1 real and 1 virtual processor, which is heavy.
3) Vista on a P4 is probably very border line. XP would be better.

Normally we recommend setting BOINC to use 1 core on a hyperthreading P4 (Advanced menu > Preferences > Processor Tab, On Multi Processor System use 50%. HT causes performance issues for many, so I'd try that first running Vista if you can't get good results.
