Oh well, woken up to another covering of the 'white stuff' and bitterly cold with it!! Looks very icy too, so care will be needed on the walk to buy my 'weekly' newspaper!

Morning all.....
----------------------------------------Clear blue skies -3c/ 24f , the sun has got his hat on and he's coming out to play ![]() >>>>>>>>>>> Walking about town looking at the closed up shops and there are a few of them, Others springing up in their wake, mostly vital traders that we cannot do without ?(phone shops & optician's) . We have old established shops in the town ( sorry that should read "City") A coffee shop, Atkinson's, No its not one of those Costa/Starbucks chrome plate glass expensive places Its the sort of place that has been selling Tea and Coffee since 1837 Its my daily pleasure as I pass it when they are roasting the beans to enjoy the aroma drifting down the street http://www.atkinsonsteaandcoffee.co.uk/page.php?Page=35 if you look at this site the picture of the front of the shop shows a vent with a blue haze the true meaning of wake up and smell the coffee ![]() There is an Iron Mongers called "The Lile Tool shop"..... Lile= Little Chaps in brown smocks selling strange tools that only they know the Purpose of. There are four shops that have Shop signs that indicate the trade A jewellers with a wooden 2ft dia gold ring over the door A Toy shop Known as the Rocking horse shop with a full sized Rocking horse. The Chemist/Apothercary that has a Pestle and Mortar mounted over the lintel And the Barbers that has a Barbers Pole, Note I said Barbers not Hairdressers Tucked away in back Alleyways /Ginnels we have a smoke house and Harpsichord maker We do have a brace of decent Butchers that sell you Local meat & game that is jointed for you not packaged in plastic trays A Local Bakers that bakes on the premises When they have sold the days production they close, as they open at 6am you need to be sharp . Being on the coast we also have decent Fish shops associated with local Trawlers . We did have one of the countries best known Furniture manufactures Warring and Gillow who during the war constructed Horsa Glider parts as well as grand furniture but that has long since closed. There are a few bespoke manufactures of cabinets or what ever you desire not quite Ikea.... So guess I can put up with the national chains super stores as long as we have the cream of small traders ![]() Have a good weekend |

Evening all
Yes, it was a bit of a shock to wake up this morning and see the world white again. It didn't last long however although it's still pretty chilly. Mind you, I got an email from a friend in Chicago who was so pleased to have a day that reached 7 below. Does your 'Barber' Den still shave or is it just an old name for a Hairdresser as, when lived in Merseyside, we had an Herr Kutz down the road. Only once did I have a shave and that was at Lime Street Station when, doing National Service in the Isle of Man, I had to catch the overnight train in order to be in time for the ferry. I thought it was supposed to be a pleasure but I felt sore for the rest of the day and I'm now so mean that I've cut my own hair for the last couple of decades. If you're watching televison, don't have a heart attack tomorrow Merle. |
