Evening all
The Guy Fawkes do I remember most is spending it with friends when they were living at Ottery St Mary in Devon. They still have the end of the light fire rites with the bonfire but also the races with flaming barrels of tar on the shoulder. All this rushing down the main road of the Village and starting with small ones (one of the sons of our friends competed in this) and then moving on through the evening as the barrels get bigger. The pubs open and plastic 'glasses' being de rigour, it was surprisingly quickly all cleared up in the morning. I found it interesting when I was in Germany that the fire ceremony was still important but their bonfires were at Easter to welcome the sun back rather than ours as a farewell to the sun. I know when I lived in Sussex, Lewes also had its own thing of tar barrels being rolled down the High Street, but I never made it to one of theirs. In the village, we did have a bonfire to celebrate the immediate day after VE was declared but the only fireworks were about half a dozen thunderflashes courtesy of the Home Guard. Have a good weekend folks. |

Morning all , steady tedding here for second day ...........
----------------------------------------Yes Ivan, the Lewis Bonfire society did have the burning tar barrels Heaven knows what Elf and safety would do about that now !!! There were quite a few bonfire society's in the district who attended each others celebrations Not all held on the 5th Nov. Brass bands,Silver bands, Boys Brigade, Lifebuoys, Boy scouts, Cadet corps , all slotted in between decorated floats. good times Edenbridge had a torch light procession 3ft hazel sticks bound with inflammable material soaked in paraffin, walkers carried these held aloft torch replenishment truck in middle of procession full of these highly inflammable objects ......... Once burnt out you would discard the torch in the gutter having lit one of the spares you carried ..... Next morning us kids would scour the streets for the discarded torches filling the old pram with them, then used for some time as kindling (the pram was also used to collect coke from the Gas works) Kindling, after the torches run out was chopped up orange, fish & veg boxes A Saturday task for me to collect empty boxes and eventually split. You could buy ready made bundles of kindling called "pimps" don't know if that was just a local name? >>>>>>>>>>>> Remembrance Sunday. Another big event in the town those young people's groups who were marching on Guyfawkes night Were assembled in the square under the command of A bloke called Napier Lt gen-sir-Napier-crookenden Bowler hat and British warm. He kept us all in order as we marched to the war memorial situated at the cottage hospital Every one in the town turned out just as they had the week before......... ![]() |
