Erroneously Suspending Computations

Hi, I need help ! I'm running Bionic version 6.4.5 on a Windows XP, Version 5.1 machine with Service Pack 3. Every time my computer starts to run either a World Community Grid or SETI@home task, the task appears to start computation, the screensaver graphics briefly appear and then immediately stops(suspends). A review of the message log shows the computations and network interface were suspended due to "user is active." No known user action is occurring. Here are excerpts from the message log:

2/14/2009 11:32:03 AM||Resuming computation
2/14/2009 11:32:04 AM||Resuming network activity
2/14/2009 11:34:06 AM||Suspending computation - user is active
2/14/2009 11:34:06 AM||Suspending network activity - user is active

At that point Windows returns to my User selection window. I have four Users on this machine and my user's account is password protected. Turning off the password protect appears to make no difference.

I am also running Spinhenge@home. It runs with no problem.

Any thoughts or recommendations ???

Re: Erroneously Suspending Computations

Hello Mhilletals,
The first thing is to look at BOINC Messages tab. The start should tell you whether you are using general preferences from the website or special preferences for your computer only. Change the relevant set of preferences to Run when User is Active. Apparently, you are suspending BOINC when the user is active.

Re: Erroneously Suspending Computations

Hi Lawerence and others,

Changing perferences allowed the Projects/tasks to start computations ... thanks. However, I'm still not see any graphics on my screen saver for Seti@home or World Community Grid (only the Spinhenge@home graphics display as a screen saver).

In Windows, screen saver is set to:
Bionic
- on resume display welcome window - checked yes
- Settings:
- go to Blank screen - not checked
- minutes until blank - 60

The version of Bionic and Windows I'm using is specificed in my intial posting. Any thoughts or recommendations. Thank you

Re: Erroneously Suspending Computations

We don't support BOINC 6.4.5.

What happens when you start the graphics for a World Community Grid task manually?

Woah! I didn't know that!

I got a thing in my messages window that said a newer version of the BOINC client is available and to click the BOINC.berkeley.edu link... I didn't see any reason not to do this.

I thought it was odd, as I did this on both my existing machines when I got the message and the systray logo changed from the WCG logo to the BOINC one, but when I installed a new machine from the WCG download site (because I'm a good boy really), it has the WCG logo on - I just assumed it was a WGC branded one as I'd downloaded it here.

I'm assume that while the agent is running and processing the WU successfully I should leave it be, but if I have any issues, to uninstall and go with the supported version? Is there any way that the WCG client can be also adapted to only show this message when a new version of the WCG approved BOINC client is available, and point them to the WCG download site?

Hope you don't think I'm leading this thread astray, but it felt like the conversation was heading towards potential issues with unsupported versions of the client.

Re: Erroneously Suspending Computations

Exactly, gordoma.

In the future, we won't have this problem, because BOINC 6.2.28 gets its new version information from IBM, not Berkeley. Previous BOINC versions didn't support this.

Re: Erroneously Suspending Computations

Was the injection of those special lines not exclusively if the installer detected that cc_config.xml was not modified by hand for a previous install?

The lines to add to only get notified by WCG and know if the IBM host centre is up are:

<options>
<client_version_check_url>http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/download.ph...ent_version_check_url>
<client_download_url>http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/download.php</client_download_url>
<network_test_url>http://www.ibm.com/</network_test_url>

Re: Erroneously Suspending Computations

Hello,

I'm like Matt, Boinc 6.4.5 sure looks like a WCG approved product ... What is the latest and greatest official "client" that should be used with WCG?

Any issues with uninstalling Boinc 6.4.5 and reinstall the WCG approved Client?

Finally, your question about running the graphics manually ... when running them manually a window opens and the graphics run with no issue, just not as a screen saver.

Thanks ... Regards
mhilletals

Re: Erroneously Suspending Computations

Hi Mhilletals,
When I click on Download Now, I go to http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewDownloadAgain.do which lists BOINC 6.2.28. If 6.4.5 works for you, then great. It is a hasty version turned out to work with CUDA on Nvidia GPU boards and is full of bugs.

If you ever want to reinstall an older BOINC version, you can try to install over your current version. It might work but is not guaranteed. What is guaranteed is to set BOINC to 'Accept no new work' and finish the current work, then Update to send the final report to the Scheduler, then uninstall BOINC and only then install the new BOINC version.

A lot of trouble. I would start by trying a simple reinstall and see what happens.
