Hello. I recently received an email message stating that I haven't returned a result since 20081216, and if I were having computer problems to post in the WCG technical help forums for assistance. well. I am, but it's not technical. I haven't had enough money
to pay for an internet connection . so I haven't been able to connect to and download work units from the grid. I am posting here in an effort to regain an internet connection, either low cost, or free, and help the WCG again. I live in the states, in the 95828 zip code (if you don't know what that is, don't worry about it). if anyone can help with an internet connection, or donate to the "poor boy" fund it would be greatly appreciated. Both the World Community Grid and I would be very happy customers.the situation here is real, however the request is semi-serious. I need the money, but I don't expect it. cheers! |

Hi jon_joy_1999,
----------------------------------------Firstly, I'm presuming that you do have a very limited amount of Internet access - as you've; a) received the e-mail, and b) managed to log onto the forum and post... Thus, is that connection via an Internet cafe or from your own machine (which, I'm presuming is the machine which is/was doing the 'crunching')? If it's via an Internet cafe, then I can't really help you - as I'm the other side of the 'pond'. Hopefully, someone from your zip code (as I believe you call our equivalent - Post Codes), can help... If, on the other hand, you've received/read and responded to that e-mail (i.e., posted on the forum) via your own computer, did you use dial-up? or via another method (i.e., a friend's internet connection). Basically, I'm guessing that the challenge that you're facing, is that you don't have access to a constant connection to the Internet - i.e., Broadband, am I correct? ![]() |

You can get dialup like NetZero for something like $9.95/month. Can't find anything cheaper than that just doing a quick Google search.
If this is a laptop you could always take it to an Internet cafe like gb009761 stated. There are hot spots with free wifi in lots of places. You could always just set your preferences to cache up a weeks worth of workunits and go back once a week to update your client and have it return the results and download new ones. If it's a desktop then you're probably limited to the dialup access. I used to have DSL for $15 a month from Verizon. It beat dialup, that's for sure. Not sure who your local phone company in the Cali area is. Give them a call and see if they can cut you a deal. |
