there should be a version for small cpu usage ... cpus get hurt running 100% all the time ... A properly designed and maintained system should not be hurt by running at 100% utilization. Please see the item in the Help facility at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=cpuuse. You may wish to look at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2243#13391 which discusses CPU utilization. Using the search facility built in to the forums to search on heat and utilization will point you to several threads which have addressed this issue. Some of these posts point to utilities to measure processor temperature and others to utilities which allow you to limit how much individual processes may comsume. Here is one of many threads talking about ThreadMaster and Motherboard Monitor: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2200
Search and Google can find much more information on these topics. A computer should be able to run all the time, but manufacturing and design errors sometimes occur. You can check the temperature of your CPU using the thermocouple built into the motherboard. If it is high, then you can use ThreadMaster until your computer is fixed. This is just the way I view this matter. Other people have other opinions. There is a lot more that can and has been said. More helpfully, if you tell us the temperature of your CPU chip under full load and what CPU you have, we will tell you whether or not you have a problem. Lawrence |

Try using SpeedFan, it's one of the best apps to monitor temperatures of CPU, motherboard, HDDs...

Newbie,
do use use speedfan a lot? Do you have any experience using it on a Toshiba laptop? I cannot get SpeedFan to see the fans in my laptop even though I have enable all options for speedfan to search for devices. I donot want to control the fan, I am just interested in seeing how it reacts to the changes of processor, radiator and incase temperatures. RobertS |

Toshiba has a diagnostic utility PC DiagX Toshiba PC Diagnostic Tool for Windows XP/SP2 (v3.0.6; 07-23-2004; 3.79M) that can be downloaded at http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su...jsp?moid=519121&ct=DL but I do not know what it shows.
