Yesterday we went up the Maiella for a hike, where at Blockhaus it's always 10C cooler in summer than down below [where it's scorching now]. Made this shot , second click for full 8 MPix image, with a few snow patches left on the barren / shady side, and compared that to one of 12 years ago, and noticed the shrub like dwarf pine [seen also in front] had made it's habitat up to the left most peak top of the conglomorate... > 2500 meters. This is a mountain [main peak almost 2900 meters, more to right], that often had it's first snow cap [cappellino] deposited in mid September... if it lasts, a sign for a good ski season. 50 clicks north is/was the most southern glazier of Europe [Calderone], http://www.ilgransasso.com/en/territory.html which sits on the north east side, facing the Adriatic and getting the full winter winds off Siberia/Balkans [bora]. You dont want to be up at near 3000 meters when that one comes racing in with gusts up to 200kmh.
Stay save, stay cool [and as the doctor keeps repeating in summer to all it's patients... drink plenty, before 1700 hours, even when not thirsty]. |

Haven't been crunching in awhile, had both machines die simultaneously. (one was expected) So I'm out of commission for a bit while I save up for new crunching hardware. Highs in the upper 90's today and forecast for the next couple of days. We have had almost no rain in the last 2 months, after an unusually snowless winter. Bad, bad news for Iowa farmers.
----------------------------------------Here's a wierd (lack of) rain-related story. We adopted a puppy in May. I bought him a little raincoat because May and June are usually rainy. He has outgrown it without ever wearing it -- no rain! ![]() |

Almost the same here. Hot and no rain. If we do not start getting rain in the next few days, the dryland crops will be becoming dead, dead dead. It is cloudy tonight but all of the rain seems to dissipate before it makes it here. Update from the morning of July 18:Hallelujah ! It's raining. 66 F(19C). Cheers

This is the weather... of the Arctic, where a Polar Low is ravaging the [remaining thinning] ice at the moment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-e75d8sbUl8&feature=player_embedded Watch and see the ring of rain around it. Anyone in that zone which reaches way down south to such wonder places as the UK. Get your wellies out.
Whilst, we continue to fry down here...forecast for the next 7 days 32C, actual, none stop through next weekend. ![]() Hi 33° RealFeel® 40° Precipitation 4% The funny subtitle to this present is ""Colder"". Ha |

Just reading in our local on-line circular that an emergency warning [alarm level 3] and phone number has been issued by the province: Expected actual temp peaks of 40C [104F] for the next 48 hours, 65% humidity. Shutting down comps as this is bound to cause power spikes people switching their airco's to max [Hospitals/medical centers are given priority, leading to blackouts elsewhere]. We're going up the mountain again... factor 50 suncream... UV has been brutal the last weeks.
