devilish Re: Project Update from the CEP Team

Perhaps a longer Beta run would have highlighted the problems. I have decided to opt of of this project for the time being.

I am going to opt back in so any work unit returned foul or otherwise can be analysed and worked upon.

Re: Project Update from the CEP Team

I have thought that too (silently smile ) at the beginning.
But if most problems are related to particular types of molecules and not to particular device setups it is probable that these problems would have been found only when moving to production... one month later. Test batches usually consist of numerous clones of a few different jobs.

If we look at failing WUs (maybe a few percents) it is disappointing and it makes us uncomfortable. But if you look at the real work that has been returned since the launch it is not negligible, considering that distribution is low and has been paused several times. Right now:
Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) 460:014:00:16:01
Points Generated 363,621,641
Results Returned 274,689
and
Results Per Calendar Day 5,386.06
I have decided to opt of of this project for the time being.

No problem. If you don't want to deal with errored WUs this is exactly what you have to do and WCG will never question your choice. Simply keep an eye on the CEP forum and/or on the CEP stats page to know when main problems are behind us and when you think it is OK for you to select it again.

Thank you for your contribution, and sorry for the trouble. Jean.

Re: Project Update from the CEP Team

I don't know who's having all the trouble, but I've only had 1 bad WU out of the 32+ I've done so far.... and that bad one was right before the first of the two brief project holds we just had.

Anyways, thanks for all the work on the project guys. Keep up the good work! Hopefully we'll reward you guys with some good results that'll help make a difference.

Problems or not, and there were a few, I have 81 days so far myself of good CEP results entered.

Fortunately we're not a one trick pony here. We have several other mature subprojects that need a lot of crunching.

Re: Project Update from the CEP Team

Yes, during the most recent Beta phase, we received and processed one WU, and we were granted credit for that.

Perhaps our underlying discontent is related to the way CEP sends out WUs that are a really nothing more than time bombs. They consume days of CPU time and then explode. And then we don't even get a thank you (credit) for the resources we donated.

The CEP WUs are too long, and they seem to be not well thought out and badly programmed. If, during the course of its calculations, a WU detects something unexpected it shouldn't "Error" out. It should terminate with full thanks and credit for the "Valid" result that it was a bad WU!!!

We're new at WCG, not even two months yet. All of the other available projects just seem better organized and more deserving of our limited resources.

I agree. However it seems that this situation which I find acceptable in the research field is new here. the CEP scientists are about as new at WCG as you are, and the software package they use (CHARMM) is new here as well. It's not surprising that its use leads to some unexpected discoveries and that some computations are not adequately defined. In this case, as long as all crunchers return the same CHARMM error message crunching itself should be considered valid. However the validators have probably never been set for this situation before. I hope that the techs will consider this possibility and will support the scientists for using CHARMM in such a way that it does not blow up when a set of commands leads to such a situation and that it outputs a civilized CHARMM error message which can be recognized and accepted by the validators.

When you say "All of the other available projects just seem better organized" do you mean all other WCG projects or all other Boinc grid sites? If it is the latter I think that "all" is arguable... smile

Thank you for your feedback. Jean.

Re: Project Update from the CEP Team

**********************

We've already had one of your new WUs error out on us, so we aborted the rest of the CEP WUs allocated to us and have opted out of the project again.

Get your act together guys!!! This project should still be in Beta test.

...so did you help in Beta when it was?

Re: Project Update from the CEP Team

Scribe isn't "bashing". It's a valid question. Did you ante up for beta testing? It's a bit rude to be critical of a project and not offer to help.
